Hi

I'm confused. I have a folder of Nikon raw files that I've extensively worked-up in ACR. I now want to send these raw files to someone else, so that they can work them up from scratch - i.e. I want to send them the native raws, without any of my adjustments.

I thought this would be as simple as trashing the xmp files, but I've done that and the files still open in ACR with my settings.

As a test, I've tried sending the folder of nefs to a different computer, but again, the nefs open up in ACR with my settings. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks :)

Send the NEF without the XMP file. Do not send the whole folder, open it in file explorer and select just the NEFs to send.

Yeah, that's what I've done - I sent a folder containing nothing but nefs to my laptop. They're still opening in ACR with settings applied (e.g adjustment brushes).

I can't duplicate this on my Windows 10 computer. What operating system are you using?

Are you using ACR through Photoshop, or through Bridge, or via some other method? Are you sure you haven't created a pre-set that is being applied when the file opens?

Have you tried clearing the settings?

In Bridge, right-click on a file, click on Develop Settings and then on Clear Settings. This should remove any adjustments you have made in ACR except for labels, stars etc. which you have to remove separately.

If it works. you may want to copy your other NEF RAW files to a different folder before clearing all the settings so you don't lose the settings you want to keep for yourself.

I'm on a Mac. I don't use Bridge. I browse nefs in Photo Mechanic and then open them in Photoshop/ACR.

I don't use Bridge - but I could fire it up to clear the settings.

But I'm really trying to figure where the settings are kept - I'd always assumed that they were in the xmp files that fill up my folders, but now I'm thinking these xmp files are just those generated by Photo Mechanic when I give photos ratings. The ACR settings must be stored somewhere else, as they persist after all the xmp files are deleted. And they seem to span all my computers. Are they in the nef itself?

Have you tried looking at the RAW files in some non-Adobe software? Try FastStone Image Viewer (free) for example.

Yes, in Apple's Preview the raw files are rendered without settings.

Yes. But do you know whether the Apple viewer is rendering the raw data or displaying the embedded jpeg? If it is the embedded jpeg, you still don't know if the raw edits in the xmp file have been de-linked or not.

I'm not sure, but I think Apple Preview is rendering the raw data. The embedded jpegs are black and white (my Nikon Picture Control was set to Monochrome). Apple Preview renders the nef in colour.

Very strange.

Does the person you are sending the NEFs to use ACR? If he/she does, and the problem persists) then the person can reset the NEF to the unedited stage by doing a "reset to default". If the person does not use ACR the ACR edits should not be visible.

Yes, they use Photoshop.

I'm now less concerned about them, and more concerned about where my ACR adjustments are stored. I had always assumed they were stored in xmp files together with the images, but that seems not to be case. I've looked through ACR Preferences and I can't find any relevant settings.

I'm using the latest Photoshop. Are my ACR image settings stored in the cloud?

I don't use Photo Mechanic, but what happens if you DON'T put in that step of browsing them in Photo Mechanic?

Should not be unless you have saved them to the cloud.

Try purging the ACR cache.

I've purged the cache, but it makes no difference - the nefs still open with all the adjustments (incl. image specific local adjustments) that I made previously (two years ago). This laptop is new - the nefs in question have never been near it before I transferred them earlier today.

Okay, crazy thought, and unlikely to be the problem, but at this point no one has a solution, so I ask: are these really NEF, or are they DNG?

I am not familiar with mac, but are you sure that the XMPs are not present? In Windows "show hidden files".

I'm not sure. There are certainly no xmp files visible in the finder. I don't know whether they might be hidden.
