My friend sent this picture (see below) for printing at 4x6, and got a shock when he got it back from the printers. It's got the picture only in a tiny area in the centre. All around it was black.

Could someone enlighten us of the problem, and how could he print properly at 4x6 with only the picture and no border? The print shop people were no help, and my PS skills are limited. Does he need to resize and resample?

rgds,

The image below if that's what he sent you is 800x600 resolution at 72dpi. That could just be the hosting service thought.

If you are going to print it, have him send you the original image. Even off my Nikon 995 the 3.34mp images are less then one meg each.

Is the below a scan or camera pic?

It could be a scan, Microtek scanners have black lids.

It was taken with a canon S30, and I think he cropped it. Sad thing is, he saved the crop by overriding the original...! So, there isn't any originals left. Just what you see, plus all the black borders.

You can see a clearer pix at http://www.pbase.com/brinjal/raghus_pix .

Can anyone help pls?

thanks.

There are not enough pixels without the black border to print this out at 4x6. With the black cropped off, I'm getting only 194x109 pixels. A printed pic of this file would have to be very tiny. There's not enough to resample to do any good, either.

Yep, Barry is right. At best it would print decently (150dpi) at 1.2"x0.7" :-(

Lesson learned. Never work on your original as you may accidentally overwrite it. If you even open the original in an editor the first steps should ALWAYS be "Duplicate Image", then "Close" on the original.-- Claus

Thanks, guys. Guess we'll have to make do with 150dpi @ 1.2" x 0.7".

Umm, what's the right workflow to do that in PS6.01?
Workflow and workflow...that's a mighty big word for this operation :-)

Go to Image-> Image Size, unclick the resample checkbox, change the resolution field to 150 ppi and then print. You can experiment with other values between 100 and 200 (the higher the value the smaller the print but the less pixelated). You can also try to resample to twice the number of pixels to be able to print a bigger version but I doubt the result will be acceptable.-- Claus

Thanks for the steps, clausium.

Sorry. Guess a little of my day job vocab got into it...! :-)

Actually, if you look at the link to pbase, and look at the original, the size is 2048 x 1536. The non-black portion looks like about 512 x 297, so there may be a bit more resolution to work with if he uses the original that's on pbase?

You're right. I had downloaded the "large" not "original" by accident. May be able to squeeze a 3.5x2 out of it then :-)

I got about 508 x 283, and resampled it to 200ppi. The printout is not that fantastic. Guess that's a lesson learnt...!

Btw, how do I increase the crop size pixel by pixel in PS6.01 - say from 508x283 to 509x284? What's the keystroke for that?

Thanks everyone.

You send an email to your friend and ask them to resend the picture bigger. :)
