How to open 20D RAW images with Adboe Camera Raw

Yes, Canon's software will support it right away, and Adobe will eventually release an update to it's Camera Raw plug in. Same for the other RAW software manufacturer's out there. I think the point originally raised here was for people to be able to use Photoshop CS NOW to play with the posted 20D RAW files. Some people just like to tinker :) And don't want to wait 1-3 months.. :))
When the 10D arrived it wasn't supported by Adobe, but someone
figured out you could use a hex-editor and edit the Adobe Raw
Converter-filter. I just tried to do the same with 20D - and it
works pretty good. The saved WB doesn't seem to work so good, but
the WB-presets seems to be ok. Anyway, here's how to do it:
Surely Canon's own software will support RAW straight off the bat.

I can not figure this out for the life of me. The edited file wil not work. I am no Hex genius. Will someone send me the hacked raw file??

Thanks for any help.

1. Close Photoshop if it's open.

2. If you don't have the latest Camera Raw (2.2, wich supports the
1D Mark II): Download the update from Adobe's homepage and copy the
Camera Raw.8bi-file to your Plug-Ins/File Formats-directory,
replacing the original.

3. Make a backup of the file you just copied.

4. Open the Camera Raw.8bi-file with a hex-editor (Ultraedit is a
good one; http://www.ultraedit.com/ ). Search for "Canon EOS-1D Mark
II", replace it with: "Canon EOS 20D". Replace the "Mark II"-part
with seven zero-bytes.

5. Start Photoshop and open up some 20D RAW-files and play with
them. :)

I haven't tried this yet cause I have no 20D files to play with. However after looking at the adobe camera raw plugin file, a possible hack would be just to add "Canon EOS 20D" followed by 0x00 afterwards.

This way the 1D-MarkII files would stil work

Once again, I haven't tried it, but I see no reason why this wont work.

Hex editor would look something like this

454F532D 31440043 616E6F6E 20454F53 EOS-1d Canon EOS
2D314420 4D61726B 20494900 43616E6F -1D Mark II Cano

I thought I hAD included the blank between the "EOS" and the "20D"
but evidently had grown " fat fingers ". But fixing that and using
Hex = )) for the zero byte additions and it now works fine. AM
linking to the final hex code in case it will help others.

Thx again :) With just alittle time it gets simple to read the hex
directly. but of course you can type in the text area if you
prefer.. I just found it easier to use the hex to keep track of
things!

The hack may work, but it's not optimized for the 20D chip... so you are getting a partial hack. Part of the process of adding support is creating curves and parameters that match the particular camera; since this is a 'new' chip, the parameters most certainly won't match the 1DMk2.

They might be close enough though, at least until the real version gets released.

Nice hack!

Telling people how to modify their copies of Adobe software is one thing, but redistributing copies of that software in breach of the licence you agreed to with Adobe when you installed the software would seem likely to attract lawyers...
