I would like to lighten the face of the man in the white T-shirt standing on the right. The shadow is too dark. I could just use a lassoo, or magic wand, but I would like to learn how to use a mask properly in PS. Could someone walk me quickly through the steps on how to do it?

This was covered in a thread a couple days ago:

many ways of course
i would duplicate layer, mode to screen.
add layer mask, fill with black.
choose small soft, low flow, white brush and paint over the face.

Add a New Layer set to Color Dodge filled with black. Set your paintbrush to start with about 40% opacity and the paint color to white. Stroke of the black layer. You should immediately see whatever you painted over lighten. If it has lighten too much, undo and lower the brush opacity. You'll find this to be a good method. Merge visible when finished.

Thanks for ideas. I'm trying out the mask suggestion first, but have hit a snag. I duplicated the background, clicked on the new background copy layer, hit the mask button, selected screen mode in the layer properties box. But...how do I fill with black? When I paint in black, nothing happens (I can paint in white, though), even though it's registering in the history palette.

an even easier method:

create a new layer, change mode to soft light, make sure foreground and background color are white and black, grab a brush, set opacity to around 30% or to your liking, then paint with white as foreground color to dodge, black as foreground color to burn...

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for responding. I've been busy moving countries. I've just used the ideas you all gave.

I also like lassoo-ing the area I want to lighten, pushing up the feather setting to about 40 and then opening up the curves. Only problem is that it affects the background and not a layer.
