how to add filter to g2/g3?

i have never used canong2/g3, is there any methos to add filer like uv filter and cpl filer to g3 as i want to buy g3 soon

If you have a G3, it looks like only Canon's 58mm adapter is currently available. If you're looking at the G2, you can get adapters from Tiffen (43mm), Lensmate (49mm), and Canon (58mm). Many people are using the Lensmate adapter. No vignetting with at least 2 filters stacked. 43mm...might not be so lucky. Tiffen makes that adapter for its MegaPlus lenses, though you can also just get the Lensmate adapter and Tiffen's nice 49-43mm step-down ring and do just as well. The Canon adapater will just cost you more money for filters, and is preferred only if you really want the (expensive) Canon lenses.

If G3...you can also wait for Lensmate. They're putting together a 52mm and a 58mm adapter soon.

I'm confused about this lens adapter thing. The G3 zoom lens is retractable right? So there is no way to keep a permanent filter on it. So I assume that is why we have a lens adapter? But if you keep the lens adapter and filter on the camera permanently, then that makes the profile of the camera larger? So you lose the ability to have a compact camera because this adapter sticks out all the time? Can someone please clarify for me how these adapter things work when you want to keep a filter on the camera permanently to protect the lens?

Thanks for clarifying. That's too bad. Compactness relative to other top prosumer digitals is one of this camera's benefits, IMO. This lens adapter setup somewhat diminishes that advantage. I wonder why Canon can't just thread the part of the lens that retracts and make it so it doens't retract all the way flush with the outer ring? That way one can keep a UV on all the time without having to deal with an adapter. Oh well, it's still a very nice camera and one I am considering in the near future.

Technically it looks possible to make a thread for filters directly on the lens but probably the end diameter of the lens would have to be bigger to avoid vignetting with the filter. But then again, I can't imagine my pretty heavy teleconverer to be screwed directly to the camera lens. So, we need the adapter anyway.

One other issue with the idea of leaving a lens adapter on the camera permanently that I have discovered with my G3. The 58mm lens adapter is so big, that it blocks nearly have of the viewfinder (not a great big deal if you plan to use the LCD for framing) and almost entirely blocks the AF assist light. For low-light focusing situations, particularly indoors with available light, you are going to want to take tha 58mm sucker off so that you can get a decent focus. Otherwise, you will end up using the manual focus quite a bit.
