In an effort to bring out some of the branching topics from Ben's letter announcement, I'm starting a new thread here discussing how old posts are retained.

I would encourage everyone to adopt this practice if there are questions within Ben's letter, or other lengthy threads, about the new system. We can be quicker to answer and even provide these teasers as we go along, if there's a distinct thread for it.

Ben's post reference: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/68454483

Thanks all for the great questions coming in! Expect a consolidated FAQ posted asap by us.

One of the ways to retain old posts is to send them to archive.org.

One of the ways to retain old posts is to send them to archive.org.
You’re then dependent on a third party to maintain the old posts. If the funding runs out for archive.org then you (I.e. DPR) lose all your old posts. I suppose if archive.org loses all its funding then there might be more urgent things to concern people, like how do we get back those cookie recipes from 1998?

Archive.org was previously hacked and they were offline but it’s running again.

... discussing how old posts are retained.
Not sure what the question is here - what format, or where, or ... ?

If it's to whether old posts are retained as posts, or retained at all, I find other forums I use for technical reference frustrating when they drop posts over a certain age, or only retain posts X months old; the value and the effort is gone.

It can be a bit hit and miss too - for example, if you look back at early DPR forums on Archive.org they keep the thread title but not any contents

I haven’t checked Archive.org for the forum posts.

I thought this post was for DPR (Matthew/Ben) to explain how old posts were to be retained. Am I wrong?

You're not wrong, I read it as to be retained but I thought of Archive.org as a way to retain/archive old posts.

I'm not sure what will happen, will everything be retained (26 years) or will there be Partial retention of old posts.

If you look a recent snapshot at one of the Forums on the Archive.org it says:

“The Wayback Machine has not archived that URL.

This page is unavailable for archiving. The server returned code:

because access is forbidden”

So I presume either DPR are currently blocking Archive.org from archiving it, or it’s too detailed for Archive.org to be concerned with

I thought the initial announcement (which has now been removed) said that all the old forum data would be moved over?

Yes, but I think the fear is that without threaded the connections which are clear in thread will not be available anymore

I am not saying to show them in threaded view, we already know XenForo is incapable of it, but to preserve the structure even if they can only be viewed in flat view.

Probably there are better ways, this is just an idea: changing the post titles to number them like a book.
The OP would be 1_title, posts replying directly to the OP would be 1.1_title, 1.2_title and so on. Posts replying directly to 1.2_title would be 1.2.1_title, etc.

Alan,

The import contains all prior forum messages. Where a message currently appears with a copy of prior messages' text, it'll continue to do so, but not in color.

The post's title and link to its parent did not migrate. I recently asked Mathew to see if it was possible for those to migrate as body text, but I don't know if that will occur.

Bad news.

Thank you. Too little, but better than nothing.

Do you know if links to posts in the old site will work and show the same post in the new site?

As far as I can tell, both internal references and google search returns will remain valid. I’ve looked at google links for both post and thread and they still work.

Manually adjusting your uploads like this is always a good best practice, if you have the patience for it. I try to do this with my own photos, but we're talking hundreds of photos :(.
