Most people I know choose to let the camera do the work, how often do you shoot in P mode and does anyone actually use the GREEN mode?

I use P mode a lot.

And only use the green mode when i just want to register something to remeber (like a sign white an explanation) that way i can quickly jump to jpg mode insteadof using RAW for it.

...other than popping up the flash automatically on some models. I use Av and P mode the most. I used to be all TV, AV, or Manual, but the older I've gotten, the more I use P mode.

'A Hard Day's Night' was the 3rd best 'Marx Brothers' movie ever made.

I quite often use P if I am shooting in low light, and almost always if I'm shooting in low light with ETTL flash and in a hurry. If there's plenty of light, I usually shoot in Av, Tv, or M mode.

I've never used any of the "easy shooting" modes, although I've thought sometimes that I should check them out. Certainly I don't have a snobbish attitude to them: if they have any use, why not use them. AFAIK, there's no auto-ISO in these modes on the D60 like there is on the 10D, which is a pity - that would really be worth having. I wish Canon would allow ISO to be set to Auto (or a range) in all modes.

I used P mode quite a bit on my G2. Since I got my 10D I havn't used it once. It just feels like cheating. I think subconciously I have to prove that spending the big money on the 10D was worth it, and it wouldn't be if I was using it as a glorified P&S.

I use Av most of the time. M the 30% of the time that I'm shooting for a while in one location, and feel like I understand the lighting conditions better than the meter. I've played with Tv once or twice, but in the situations where Tv would be appropriate (sports, action, etc.) I just use M and keep checking hte histogram as lighting conditions change.

If someone is only going to use the P mode, they should of just bought a P&S camera.

I think a lot of people use P mode in the beginning and as they learn their way around the camera they use is less and less, if at all.

Manual, Av, Tv modes force the photography to make a conscious decision about exposure. You'll make a lot more mistakes (esp. in M) but you'll learn a lot faster.

I took a photography course last year and the instructor advised everyone to put there cameras in "M" mode and use a fixed focal length lens (50mm) for the length of course. Just as using the 50mm forces you to think and move around for best composition, using "M" forces you to consider the exposure priority by asking yourself a few questions: Am I trying to stop motion or show motion? What should be in focus and what should out of focus? What is the optimal shutter speed and aperture for this shot? Do I need to raise/lower the ISO to achieve the proper S/A combo?

OTOH, some don't want to bother with all the exposure details and just want the quality of a DSLR. That's fine too. :)

In 'P' mode you can very easily dial in the wanted aperature or shutter speed after metering the scene.

To me it's effectivley a combination of Av and Tv.

Am I missing something here? Why are people so anti P-mode when it does basically the same thing as Av and Tv combined??

With Tv and Av, you set the shutter or aperture, and it stays where you want it.

With P, the camera picks a combo. Which is rarely the one that you want. So then you have to "shift". For EVERY photo.
