How do I do wireless flash with a 40D ?

I notice that the 40D has a sync port. Could a wireless sender be connected to the sync port and could one still have the built in flash fire ?

Could a 5XX EX be connected to the sync port ?

you could try this:

1) Camera in manual mode.
2) cheap thyristor flash on hotshoe as master.
3) cheap, but adjustable power flashes with optical triggers as slaves.

I've used this solution with a total of 4 flashes with pretty good success, but I'm not a pro, and I don't know exactly what your application is. If you're doing studio work where you can easily control the exposure from shot to shot then this solution will work, at a small fraction of the cost of multiple 580EXs.

In my case I bought 4 Sunpak thyristors off Ebay at $15-30 each, two optical triggers at about $10 each, and I already had a long PC cord for the 4th flash.

I had the same question....

Aka, if I have a 550EX and a 580EX II, does one of them have to be on top of the camera or via an Off Camera Cord to still use TTL or can you use a PC Sync cord?

Thanks!

I have used the ST-E2 for years along with two 420EX and one 550EX. It wasn't cheap and it has it's limitation, but I can create near studio quality lighting at a moment's notice and it all fits in my camera bag and goes everywhere I go. The ST-E2 is infrared powered, so a lot of sunlight or a large room with the sensors on the slave flashes pointing the wrong way will result in failed flashes, but for most situations, they make my flash shots look like NOT flash shots.

I am new to canon flash & thinking of buying my 1st speed light.

I want to shoot interiors using canon 10-22 lens & want ETTL functioning with this flash + lens combination.

Does 580EX II cover 10mm coverage area or if it cannot then can it work off camera in ETTL mode to provide 100mm coverage?

No, but you can use a 550EX or 580EX on the camera to control the remote flashes AND to flash too
Can I use the built in flash and the ST-E2 ?

The only way flash coverage will matter is if you are pointing the flash directly at the scene from the point of view of the camera. IMHO the whole point of wireless flash systems is to create a more natural light by getting the flash off camera and using bouncing as much as possible. When the flashes are in slave mode they default to their widest setting, but as they are not on the camera, it will not matter if they can go to 10mm, only that your flashes are set up to cover the scene manually.
