How about Dynamic range?

Gabor,

Thanks for the analysis!

Yes I have been looking at the results and trying to understand.

When I looked at the noise I expanded the lighter area around the lock of the top drawer. I understand that this is not the darkest area but it is easier to visually identify noise, at least with my limited tool iPhoto. In this area my visual impression was that 6400 was slightly better than 3200 and 1600 most noisy. Also window sill at the left and outside light gave the same impression.

Perhaps it is simply that I am not trained to see noise with my eyes.

PS seems as if I do not have major banding problems DS

I loaded the shots in DPP, balanced the intensities and passed the results to Photoshop, w/o noise reduction. I put them as layers over each other for easy comparison. I can not see any difference in 100%.

Btw, the drawer is strongly textured, it is not suitable for noise comparison.

Regarding the banding: if you mean the pattern noise, that is more pronounced at lower ISOs. Only a very few 5D2 copies exhibit a strong vertical banding with 8-column repetition, but that is a hardware fault, Canon repairs that.
