Help! Unable to open any Program on computer

Updating a dell 2.0 P4 running xp home with Norton 2006. Screen shot came up to put in the 2005 disc and when I did it froze. I rebooted and the desktop came up fine but the icons are only white nd will not open any program. Tried start to programs and same problem as well as control panel.

Spent an hour with another useless call to dell support and after running the resource disk they backed out by saying I was out of warranty.

I had laready loaded Norton on two other desktops and a laptop with no problems.

Anybody have any ideas?

Have you tried the F8 start , into "Last Known Good Configuration" - might get you back to the "as you were" position before trying the update .. then you know what to avoid !!!

Sometimes you have to try maybe two or even three re-starts this way before it latches onto one good one it accepts...
