HELP! thinking about returning k10d

End yourself. Do the gene pool a favor.

I've been taking pictures for over 20 years, almost exclusively with Canon SLRs. After much research I bought the K10D & have taken about 1000 pictures with it & am EXTREMELY impressed with image quality. I haven't messed with the factory settings.

Maybe my eyes aren't calibrated like those of the people who say that the K10D's JPEG files are "soft" and the colors aren't sharp, but the images look awesome to me.

My advice: For those folks who are on the verge of buying the K10D--don't be discouraged by posts like these. Buy it & get to know it. It took me about a week of shooting with it to learn to navigate the controls without looking. Learn to read a histogram (I'm still working on this). The camera will do what you want it to do. Like a painter's brush, the K10D is just a tool; a very thoughtfully well designed tool.

"Wow! - that 77mm Limited is one cool piece of glass........"Wow! - that 77mm Limited is one cool piece of glass........"Wow! - that 77mm Limited is one cool piece of glass........"

(turns and sprints for the the car, fumbling in a blind panic for the ignition key)

I don't have a K10D, but do have a K100D and know in bright mode it produces images straight from the camera you would be quite satisfied with. I'm sure others on here can give you suggestions to get you the same results with the K10D, but my advice would be to take it back and get the K100D for considerably less money and probably better results for your use.

heavily consider the following. there are NEW DSLR owners' writing in all over these forums on this subject.

when changeing from a p&s to a dslr, there is a huge difference.

when you take p&s out of the box add a memory card and a fully charged battery you can now shoot and take very good pics.

BUT, you cannot do this with dslr. the camera HAS TO BE SETUP first. you have to adjust the contrast/saturation/sharpness/shooting modes to your likes. if you don't it is quite likely you will disappointed with results. your p&s will likely outshoot the dslr.

to setup-you have shoot a test shot make ONE adjustment reshoot check pc screen readjust, until you are satisfied. and you do this with each of the adjustment types. then you have all the custom adjustments in the menu to check and if wanted change.

when done you can put the camera into AUTO or PROGRAM and get reasonably nice shots. i would advise at first staying with jpeg. as you learn about the camera and photography you can then go to the other shooting modes and try RAW if you wish.

Well,

not to long ago a friend decided to return his canon 5D camera because he didn't like the pictures. He eventually ended up buying a G7 and he swears it takes much better pictures.....but by who's standards? Does this make the 5D a bad camera.....or could the user be at fault. I would say the user but that's my opinion.

What if I offended you wife? Would you defend or just sit quietly? We love
our 10D's
Wow...that about sums it all up. Thank you for proving my point.
The first rule for survival in here is to recognise and accept that
some of of the posters are clinically insane - honestly.

I remember one maniac from a couple of years ago who proudly
announced that he wanted to be buried with his Pentax!! - no, I'm
not making it up, there really are people like that who haunt
this forum.

It's really only a mater of time before the first camera-rage
murder is documented! - thinks that's far-fetched?, consider the
American gardening aficionado who was recently imprisoned for
shooting dead a 16 year old boy who walked on his newly mowed lawn!

Since we're dealing with some wildly disordered minds, it's best to
confine any criticism of Pentax to the net - if you happen to
actually meet any Pentax owners when out and about be sure to
praise their camera to the skies!! that way, you have an even
chance of making it home alive,

Some useful phrases to placate Pentax shooters (no pun intended) in
the wild are:

"Wow - that image stabilisation is just awesome - I wish my camera
had it"

"Hey!! - how come the results are so film-like?"

"Pentax is the pluckiest little camera company in the world"

"That K10D is built like a tank - makes mine look so flimsy"

""Man! - I envy you being able to use all those great old prime
lenses"

Repeat all those phrases several times, whilst backing away from
the Pentax enthusiast - then, when you've put at least fifty yards
between you, turn and run for your life to the safety of your car
or(even better) a local police station.

If you're particularly nimble (and have an adequate head start) you
might shout out, "Pity about the Pentax metering/focus/dynamic
range!!" before you take to your heels - but I don't really
recommend it. Best to safe, rather than sorry ')
Yes, sounds like you do have paranoia, so you have proven your own point! Defending trolls is a risky business for guys with paranoia, but "somebody's gotta do it".

Do you own a gun, Rupert? ;) - never mind, no need to answer, I'll err on the side of caution -

Pentax is wonderful, simply the best camera manufacturer that ever existed, or ever will exist - in fact, whenever i think of Pentax I am reminded of the Lord Chancellor's song from Gilbert & Sullivan's 'Iolathe' -

'The law is the true embodiment
Of everything that's excellent;
It has no kind of fault or flaw -
and I, my Lords, embody the law...."

Substitute Pentax for the Law, and your good self for the noble Lord Chancellor, and we have a perfect description of The Camera Company That Can.

Now, is that sufficient praise to ensure that I won't get shot? ;)

Now, that I believe.

they dry out during the time we are
out on the dusty streets patrolling for Pentax abusers. And if we
find a few, it takes a while to get a rope
Ahhh - the rope has to be supplied by Pentax, does it? That'll explain the delay, then ;)

and find a decent old
oak tree to hang them from. Then the big celebration and whiskey
drinking goes on for several days. By then those spitoons are bone
dry
You know as well as I do that by the time Pentax had the rope in stock the spittoons would not only have dried out, they'd have rusted away!

he or she comes into this forum with 5 or so posts under the belt all honked off, and leaves after causing this long thread. This seems all too common these days. Don't leave us hanging.....after starting this thread, you owe it to us.

I don't know how the rest of you feel, but good art is hard to make! I end up throwing away 80% to 90% of what I shoot (the beauty of digital), and I only post process and print 30% to 40% of what is left, so PP doesn't consume a lot of my time. But the few images that meet my standards to be printed are freakin' gorgeous!

I love my K10D, my stable of Pentax primes, and my HP B9180 printer. I have been taking pictures seriously (but off and on) for over 30 years and I have never been able to produce images as nice as I can with these tools.
