My friend recently bought a new Nikon Coolscan IV ED plus APS film adaptor.

He has followed the instruction manual and installed all necessary driver / scanner software onto his PC (running Window XP Home edition) --- in fact, he has checked with Nikon Website and downloaded latest version of the related software / firmware --- but cannot found driver for Window XP.

He has no problem on scanning single picture of APS film, but encountered problem when scanning in "batch mode" --- only the 1st scanned picture look o.k., the subsequent (2nd onward) pictures scanned are of VERY SMALL size (in fact, all the 2nd onward scanned pictures are each of only about 1K in size !)

Do any of you encountered similar problem ?

Looking for your great help and thanks in advance !

Jason.

NikonScan 3.1.2 is XP compatible.
Have you tried Nikon tech support?
I wish I could help, but I only use this scanner for 35mm.
Try posting this in the 'Open' forum.
Good luck!

Thanks JohnM !

In fact, I have e-mailed Nikon support on this query yesterday, but still waiting for reply from Nikon.

And I have just posted this query in the "Open" Forum (as you suggest), see if somemore forum users can help ?

Anyway, thanks for your input !

On the other hand, what is your comment on the Coolscan IV ED ? what "common" setting you are using in scanning film ?

For what its worth, this is what I do, using the film adapter (5-6 frames of 35mm) should be similar to the APS, but I dont have one.

Set up the defaults you want under tools

then Settings --> Save settings to a name (APS-batch or similar)

then on the slide out (multiple frame) pick the frames you want to scan (shift-click, or alt-click on pc to pick multiples)

AFTER picking the frames you want to scan, pick Settings-Load settings-APS-batch (or name you saved it under)

this will apply those settings to each scan, if you load the settings before picking the frames, the settins are only used on frame 1, then back to defaults for the rest.

Hope this helps

Thanks Art Malone !

My friend last night done similar thing (i.e. save the setting before running batch), and the batch scanning is working fine so far !

However, he don't quite satisfy with the output of Coolscan IV ED (although he has set to max 12 bit !) --- what is your comment and what is your favour setting / workflows ?

Looking for more help & thanks in advance !

Hi JohnM !

He found that the scanned image (full 12 bit without ICE) is a bit "soft" !?

In fact, for comparison, he has scanned using another flat-bed scanner, on the same "printed" image (print out by a photo finishing shop) --- and found the resulting scanned image is much "sharper" !?

(i.e. he found that scan using the flat-bed scanner on the "printed" image is better than scan using the Nikon on the APS negative !?)

Don't know whether this is caused by improper use ?

Thanks for the reply & looking for more help !

Jason.
Can you be more specific in what he doesn't like?

Does he have "autofocus" checked on?
I wish I could help more, but I only scan 35mm film with no problems.

Post this question over at the 'Scanner' Forum at http://www.imaging-resource.com There are quite a few Coolscan IV users there.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Here's what I do, after having the film (slide usually, fuji velvia) developed at a Q-lab, I scan all frames using Nikon Scan 3.1, at 1200 dpi, 8bit color, this gives me a 6mb (+ -) file, in a resolution optimized for printing a 300dpi, 4"x6" print.

after reviewing on-screen (calibrated monitor), and picking the 'good' shots that I might like at a higher res/printed size, I re-scan them, using Silverfast AI, at 2900dpi, 48bit color mode (16/chanel)
