I'm so frustrated... & on the 4th no less (not shooting any fireworks tonight). My D60 has recently been exhibiting more noise than it should on long exposure shots. Here's a 100% crop sample: 30s @ f/11, iso100, shot in RAW.

This isn't just a dirty sensor is it? It seems like more than that... I guess I gotta send it in... warranty lasts through November.

Scott - are you using a Mac? I don't think what you are seeing is a flat-panel vs CRT issue.

I see the specks on my system using a either the LCD or CRT monitor with a 1.8 Gamma. Adjusting to the typical PeeCee 2.2 Gamma renders the specks invisible to the naked eye.

I don't have any exposures longer than a 6-10 seconds so I have nothing to compare it too. However, it is not too bad considering its a 30sec exposure. I can say that in my pics, I only see the one/two hot pixels I always see at longer exposures and the noise is negligible. Do you say the specks only started showing up somewhat recently?

I am using a crt monitor and have the brightness set fairly high and I can see it. It seems to be red noise all over the image of various sizes...am I correct or am I seeing things.

red noise exactly. Thank you Russell! I guess the problem isn't huge, if this many people couldn't see it, but nonetheless I think there's a problem.

but I'm still taking this in. I'm using an Apple Powerbook & the display shows a lot of red specks... Russell nailed it... obviously it's not super-noticible, but enough to bother me. The D60 has done much better in the past w/ exposures up to 2 min.

I did do a linear RAW conversion, FWIW.

cheers,

FWIW, I can see the red noise on my laptop's LCD display - though it doesn't exactly jump out at me. One thought. You say this is recent and you got the camera in November. Having used it through the winter and spring, you've been shooting under much cooler conditions. Now that summer is here the temperatures are considerably higher. Higher temps do cause more noise and may be a factor here. Try a long exposure in a cooler place - if you can find one - for comparison.

Luck,

good point Arnie, but the noise is still more than it should be. It was only about 80 degrees when I took that shot.

here's another from the spring... it was probably in the 30s outside. NO noise.

When I first saw your post last night, I couldn't see anything on my CRT. If I turned off the room lights, then I could see a faint red noise all over.

Well, it will be interesting what how the repair center will deal with this. A certain amount of noise will always result. Although we would all like less noise or no noise, how does one determine whether this is too much?

At least in the crop you provided, I didn't see ANY hot pixels, which is better than my D60 for a 30sec exposure.

Your standards and expectations are set very high. Understandable given the price of the equipment. But I wonder whether your expectations are beyond any of the technology available today in this price range?

Good luck.

the basis of my decision to take it in is purely because it didn't do this before. I've read reviews & seen examples of 1-4 minute exposures w/o noise. Had this been @ iso800, I'd have a tough argument... but at iso100, this isn't right.

& yes, my standards are high. I shoot alot at night & now I'm starting to upsample & make large prints. for a camera that cost me slightly over $2000, I think I'm within reason :)

thanks for your input,

Scott,

My D60 is without noise too (ISO 100), no matter how long the exposure. However, a week ago I was looking at a series of pix, suddenly all containing noise (just bright daylight). Then I reminded myself putting sharpness at +1 (in camera). I found this really strange, because I can imagine noise getting emphasized by this only. But before there was no noise (IMO at all).

Btw, this was not red noise.
