Ok you have dismissed this out of hand but I will say it again:

It isn't a case of dismissing it out of hand..it's just unrealistic when you've already been told many times that it is simply impractical to spend $2000+ on a new computer to do nothing more than I do right now (I've blocked the bug and work as usual) .. plus the fact that it would require a MAJOR re-install AND very likely many progs not available at all , as many are just not done for Mac. Where is your logic ???

An analogy...

I have a leaky toilet that I want to fix myself so that I don't have to wait for, or pay for a plumber to do it professionally. I get many helpful suggestions on how to fix it, but no matter what I try, the toilet still leaks.

Then I get another suggestion to buy a nice new $200k home, because all old houses are too much hassle to upkeep, even though I live in a nice area that has many conveninces over living in a far out suburb where there isn't much available for entertainment or business.

What would you say to the person that suggested you buy a new home ?

Do a google for bazooka antivirus and run it, it will tell you exactly how to remove it. Vey small program and fast. Bill

I had a tough low level virus. I bought a new C: hard drive (needed more space anyway) and moved old drive C: to D:. Reinstalled the operating system. No loss of data.

Worked like a charm.

Until I got hit by another worse virus. Then I "had to buy" a new computer.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Well, guys, if nobody can come up with a solution I really think
this might be the last you hear from me - really ...
About 22 hours ago I foolishly logged onto what I knew was maybe a
dodgy site and in less than 1/2 hour I'd got 7 viruses.
Fortunately, most were of a nature that I sorted them out but right
now I'm plagued incessantly witrh this blasted 'Cool Web Search'
thing ...and CANNOT find a way to rid it - just changes my Home
Page EVERY time , even though I've done all in my power to stop it.
Had for years on my machines - AVG (excellent overall) - Triojan
Remover and Pest Patrol. Funnily , just a few hours before this
episode I d/loaded and setup Ad-Aware6. It found one or two things
but has done NOTHING to sort out the Cool Web Search thing. Got
'HiJackThis' which is a superb thing...it shows immediately the
entries giving this Cool Web page but although I clear them they
just auto return instantly. Got a super prog called CWShredder -
that found at first the 'AboutBlank' entry that had been popped in
, but within the last hour or two I've clearly done something and
CWShredder now tells me I've got a clean machine...which I haven't
of course.
Did NOT have before, Spybot, so d/loaded that this morning. It
found a few things but again done NOTHING to shift Cool Web ...and
in spite of numerous searches in Google , plenty of ideas on
shifting it but none work,.
This is on a two-month old new P4 3Gig laptop, on XP, my latest
pride and joy and have been piling tons of progs on it that I want
to use - NO WAY am I going to re-install to scratch and have to
start over again. Don't really know how to start and I don't know
where I'd find half the progs, keys etc to do that without a month
or more searches.
Frankly I'm just about fed up..spent 22 hours now trying to sort it
, apart from 6 hours restless night, and getting nowhere
I'd rather just give up the Internet if THIS is going to persist -
anyway, I believe that it can in fact open the door to allow
anything in ...so how on earth do I shift it after trying all this ?
Unlocked SysRestore just in case something was in there, nothing,
so I've now lost all my Restores too !!! and still no better off.
No problems in going into the Register but again, try as I may I
cannot find any clue as to WHERE is the kick-off...well, I DO find
the entry in 'Exolorer-Main' key , but that's obviously not where
it's triggered..as I change that but iyt just comes back.
It's thanks or gooodbye mates - I've about had it !

If I was totally happy where I was - I'd stay there.

Not a computer guru at all, and won't be posting/reading often, and have had similar problems to yours. Went for the reformat. This site, if you haven't already used it, may help. It performs an online scan of your system. I had it scan every option it allowed. Took 5 hrs or so, but I had alot of stuff on my hard drives.

BitDefender.com http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/license.php

Tells you what it found where, and if it got rid of it. I'm not tech enough to fix what it didn't.

best luck,

Bill -
Very many thanks for the thought.

Too many here seem to think I'm a dummy, and have come in late without finding out anything about earlier events and many top progs have been suggested time after time.

YOURS was indeed a new one, not heard of before...so "in for a penny ..." ... d/loaded it and ran.

Did not expect a 700K prog could really compete with the top ones..6Meg or so.. and alas..such is the case.
NOTHING DETECTED...it said..so another one bites the dust.

I really begin to wonder if I'm chasing shadows here. If I'd got the courage I'd take off my own 'blocker' and see what happens...but I simply don't have the courage. I do NOT want to open the door again...JUST in case !!!
Anyway, thanks..

Thanks - had that one on too. Very excelent prog by the way...did a thorough scan in no time at all on my P4 3.06Gig processor - but NOTHING. As said just above, I'm really beginning to think I'm chasing shadows as I got 7 viruses in no time firstly, cleared those , did a few more things and ran VERY secure progs - since then NO prog has come up with anything but clear reports .. the only doubt is that Spy Sweeper keeps giving a message that my Home page has changed (but it hasn't because of my 'block') and I'm just assuming something is trying...yet with progs of high repute finding NOTHING, I really do wonder ????

.. my present laptop computer is only 3 months old and a P4 3.06Gig with CD and DVD- + burners and everything else you could wish for. (Not exactly a worn out old machine I'm flogging myself with) . Pity to throw it away I think ..but if you are proposing to buy me a nice new Mac then I'll give it a try. Please send your cheque for something like $2,000 made payable to PC World co.uk and I'll dash down the road where I know they have a whole line of them .. sure there must be one that you'd approve of ...?
