help a80 vs g3

Probably worth waiting one or two months to see how the A80 shapes up- not only the big reviews but also user operator reviews- how does it fair in the hands of the shooters themselves.

Judging by the G2 which is still available new here and there if you look hard enough, the G3 should still be able to be found.

Whatever you do, get the A80/G3/whatever camera some months before your trip in order to give yourself some time to master every aspect of it. You don't want to take time on your trip to work out what this and that does- you want to be fluent enough so you can just shoot without worries.

Have fun,

hello. i am relatively new to the digital camera industry. ill
explain my situation. i have decided to travel the world next
september (fall 2004). i will be gone for 8 months to a year
visiting over 25 countries. i need a digital camera to take along.
i will be backpacking through many countries so the camera can't be
to heavy or big. i have narrowed it down to the a80 (which doesn't
have a decent review) and the g3. now i want to be able to control
many things as i intend on using the camera in many situations
(including underwater and night photographs of the sky in egypt).
price is an issue but the g3 is within the budget. any coments or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. if anybody can suggest a
better camera then by all means do so. ill investigate. thanks in
advance. i have already found this forrum to be quite useful.

Have not read all the comments here but I would suggest using disposable underwater film cameras for that aspect of the trip and keep your nice A80 away from water, sand and salt etc. Then have the underwater shots printed to CD for later digital use. Look for a great buy on underwater cameras. If that's not practical, then bring along a backup digital cam, maybe an A60 or A70 for a spare, or do your underwaters with an A60 or 70. Same logic applies to G3 vs a cheaper counterpart. Don F.

Yes I agree - get disposable cameras for underwater in case it would leak and there goes all that money!! Since the A80 is new, wait to see how more people like it and purchase A80 before the trip to get a good feel for what it can do. If compactness is important, get the A80 else get the G3, it seems like many like the G3 after they get used to it. Both seems to be good cameras. I am waiting for my A80 and having my s110 for almost 2 years, I'm eager to try out all the latest features it offers for the price. :)

I have both a S50 and G5; I've travelled with both, and size does make a difference. I find myself reaching for the S50 when I travel.

Although neither use AA batteries, I think a camera that takes AA batteries is a plus in travelling. Look for an Ansmann charger, it comes with 4 different plug adapters, which should cover the majority of your countries, and it automatically senses and sets voltage. It's expensive at about $70., but I never felt it made much sense to cut corners when travelling abroad.

You bring up an interesting choice with the A80; the AA's I like, and it now has the swivel LCD which I really like. That's it, you've talked me into my next travel camera.

It is a camera for old timers like me who still think FE2 one of the best cameras ever (I almost bought an FM3 despite the fact I have not shot film for more than a year
