Hi all! I just received my camera yesterday. Love it except for the fact I am receiving an error message.............message number 99.

I took out the battery, charging it, took out the card, and took the lens off and I am waiting the 30 minutes (something I read on the internet) to see if this helps.

It almost always happens when I am in auto mode, and the flash pops up. It will take the first pic and then on the next pic, the error message will pop up.

The next time I see it happen is when I am using my Canon 75-300 IS lens and I am extended to the max on the lens....300. This was happening when I was taking pictures outdoors where it was nice and sunny out. The error message just popped up now and then with this lens.

When I put on the tamron tele-converter with the canon lens, the error message happened about 50% of the time.......again I was outside shooting on a mostly sunny day.........so I should have had enough light. Some times the camera would think I needed the flash and it would pop up and then lock up and other times it would just lock up.

Any advice is appreciated............thinking I need to call Amazon and exchange it for a new one.............or is it me??????

Thanks!

K....I just tried a fully charged battery after letting the camera sit for 30 minutes. Same deal, flash popped up and took the first picture........and then locked up when trying to take the second.

I then went into "program mode" to turn of the flash, and I took picture after picture....low light, high light and everything in between.

I am really thinking it has something to do with the pop up flash.........

What are your thoughts???

Thanks
Kammy

Make sure the contacts are clean on your battery and lenses. I had this happen a couple of times when my 40D was new. I discovered one of my older batteries (3-4 years old) was very erratic at discharging/recharging so I disposed of it, and cleaned all the contacts on my lenses and other batteries and I have not seen the problem again.

Try a spare battery if you have one (and you should!), if the Err 99 keeps coming up you may indeed have a problem and should call Canon support and/or exchange the camera. Best of luck.

Use 3rd party, bad messages, it's your call.

Whatever's doing it is space junk. Book it for a new life in recycled molten metal.

Tempermental card, battery, or lens; it doesn't matter. Stop using it.

I had a new 2nd spare Optex battery fully charged which sometimes worked and sometimes not. Random. Returned it for replacement with another new one.

A clue was the battery was too loose clicking into the charger dock even though all electrical contacts were made ok.

Was the battery slightly out of position in the body? Maybe. Can't prove it and don't care. Just solved it.

Error 99 is a generic error message and can depend on malfunction of any component inside the camera or attached to the camera. Most often it is some component attached to the camera that causes this to happen.

IMHO.

First maybe you should test your lenses and batteries with an other body (40D) just to see that the error is not caused by something else.

I guess that depends. If he bought the 40D as part of a kit (he didn't make that clear) then it should be returned. I've never seen any error messages on my 40D in over 8,000 shots using more than a few lenses.

Like I said, I would send it back. Something isn't right and why take a chance on ending up having to send it to Canon for repair?

Hi everyone! All my things worked with my other camera just fine....never had any problems (Rebel 300D)

I also have tried a new and different battery and one of my older batteries I know works from my old camera, a new card, and I have cleaned all my contacts on all my lemses. It happenes every time with every lens.

I have also tried taking a pic with out a lens on the camera (do have the cover on it) and without a card in it.........battery only and it continues to do the same, the flash pops and the first picture is taken and then it locks up and the error message appears every time when trying to take the next picture. My thought is, there is a problem with the flash.

So I have already contacted Amazon and I hope my new camera is on it's way soon!

Thanks for everyone's help............I will keep you posted on how things go with the new camera.
