Having a big problem with my a6700 I think I need to send it back

Just now testing the new camera I got in and I am using a Sony version flash trigger and this is a mess worse then the one I sent back.

Take a photo it triggers the flash I push the image playback button to see it and it sometimes shows me the image and then its locked up i can not take another photo. Pressing the shutter dose nothing the image stays showing for around 10 seconds or more and then it will Finley release the image and I am back in shooting mode.

Take another shot the flash fires but I get no image recorded I get a black screen when I push to see the image playback and it is froze up agan for some time.

If I dont try and look at the image playback I can keep shooting more but after a few shots I go look and it did not record many of the shots it is only recording some shots others are just black screens this is crazy.

Shooting in manual so things are not changing for the exposure or settings.

And I am using the Sony Kit lens for this as well now.

I was able to take 20 shots at one point but then in playback it will not let me see all the images. I look at one then two and then the screen freezes up and I can not move to the next or last image I have to turn the camera off and back on to bring it back working.

If I take the Sony version flash trigger off I can see all the images and go from one to the next. it seems the flash trigger is messing up the camera. But still when I press the review image button I get a black screen first that stays up for a few seconds before it shows me the image and everything is locked up till it pops up the first image to see. Pressing the shutter dose nothing.

So next I tested the manual flash I used in the video and it triggered every time so far but on playback I was able to go from image to image and then it froze up again after looking at around ten of the images. I was never able to see all the images as it Keeps locking up on playback.

This is mind blowing how bad this is being worst than the first camera I sent back.

Will do a lot more testing but as of right now no way I can keep this camera.

I wonder if this camera was a sent back camera as the battery was fully charged when I got it. My other one had no charge when got it.

I just did a full reset on the camera and new card format and still have the problems even with no flash or trigger on the camera. I get a black screen for a few seconds when the I press the image preview.

Then when it shows me an image it can lock up at random and be froze for a few seconds pressing the shutter, menu button or anything dose not work till it lets go of the image that was froze and then It works again.

When playing back a image even from just starting the camera up with no new shooting when I go from one image to the next at times when I press to see the next image I can see the image number change. But it dose not change the image for many seconds so I can see I pressed a few times so the number changed but then it just jumps to the number of the image going past all the images it did not show as it was froze.

Its like the camera has no computing power to work right

This camera seems to be broke even when not using a flash.

Any sugestions?

That is indeed suspicious. Can you get one of the frames off the memory card? I know how to look at exif files if you don't; and I can make space for you to upload it so we can check on shutter count etc.

I doubt (or would hope) that Adorama isn’t selling returned merchandise as new. I am an Adorama vendor and they send all returns back to us.

Does Sony seal their boxes? It’s been so long since I purchased a new Sony camera I can’t remember.

Try it with no card - (set release w/o card to enable under shooting->shutter/silent). At this point cards seem to be the only common factor. I can shoot high with no hangups, and preview the last shot only, I didn't do a lot of testing but no blank screen during preview with no card.

(I'm using the Kingston React 128/v90; I think I read you're using the Lexar 1667x cards, if you have a different brand lying around try that).

I would immediately return and purchase from a different vendor. Every new a6700 purchased on this forum reported their new cameras with uncharged batteries.

Shooting with no card it is working I can take a shot and it will play back that image right away.

I will find another card to try.

But this is the same card that worked in the one I sent back I had no problem with playback on the other camera. This card also works in the RX10 4 I have to. I have two of them new.

Here is something strange the camera is set to jpg but it recorded some raw as well but not all of them.

Also it might be shooting all the shots with no flash or trigger is on I just can not use the preview to see them in the camera.

Here is the files I just got off the camera you can see is has some raw but not all of them but that camera is set to jpg. I HAVE NOT SET IT TO RAW YET.

I found an older 32gb card and it is working now with a quick test I can play back with no problem.

I then put back in the newer 128 card that was not working and now it is working both are Lexar cards.

Something I am thinking about now and will test is I had a set of custom camera settings 1,2 and 3 I had saved to the 128 card and I backed it up on my PC so I still have it.

But when using that card in the new camera that setting file was still on the card I think even after a quick in camera format not sure.

I did at one point load in the custom setting to see if that work make it work better and it did not but that was still on the card at that point.

Then after the camera reset and another card format I see that custom setting file is now gone from the card but the camera was still not working right.

But now after removing the card and using a different one it works and then going back to the same card that did not work it works but the setting file is gone from it now.

Maybe somehow it was still looking for that setting file on the card that then was no longer there or something who knows but right now it is working with no flash or trigger on the camera with the newer larger card that was not working before.

Maybe the settings file somehow got messed up when I did the first card format I dont know.
Looking at the card on my PC I see it no longer has a folder called CAMSET that is what the folder is called that the custom settings is in I saved to my PC.

Still working on it will test flash next. Maybe it will all work after all I hope.

Did you change the filename base at some point? I've never seen A670xxxx files, just the DSC ones (a6000/a6400/a6700). (Not that this should cause issues but maybe there are some strange settings carrying over).

edit - I've had shots record when the flash doesn't go off, i.e.,when the flash battery is dead/not recharged, or I've mis-set the flash, or used electronic shutter, so that's pretty normal; hanging up is not normal - the camera is pretty happy shooting away whether the flash can keep up or not.

What struck me about @goactive's list is that the first frame number is 103. This could be an indication that he received a returned unit. Normally, I would expect the first frame number to be 101 or even 001.

I think you found the problem. That file could of confused the newer camera.

Hope it all works as it should now.

Where did you buy the second one?

No one seems to have this camera in stock yet :(

Thanks

That was not the first shots I had re-formated the card after some other shots

the file name I did change in my custom settings. I think see what happen at one point i had loaded in the custom settings and it was set to raw and jpg then I reset the camera and shot the other images.

Its working right now.

Been doing more testing with flash now.

Using the same card that was not working before I think it was the custom setting folder doing something wrong.

The other camera created this custom settings folder on the card.

Anyway now testing with the Sony version Godox/Flashpoint trigger I just shot 100 shots using my AD200 flash and want in and did image previews every few shots and it worked 100% not messing up or looking up so far. I can also go from images to image with no problem now.

Then tested the Fuji Godox trigger I has used on the camera I sent back with the camera in manual and it worked as well I did 90 shots with the AD200 flash with no problem with looking at previews,

Then tested the Godox manual flash on it I used in the video and shot 70 images with no lockup or image preview problems.

Flashing every time now on all three devices.

Next I am going to try and load in my custom setting moving it to the card from my PC I have it saved, and see what happens.

After I load it in I will them format the card and then check to make sure the folder is removed as I think the camera holds this custom setting info in itself no card needed for this.

Then test some more. I spent a lot of time setting up my custom settings I would like to keep.

The basic settings are.

1 is set for natural light shooting in non human tracking and single point and single point focus

2 is set the same but has human tracking on and AF-C

3 is set to Manual for use with using flash.

I was under the impression that the extra (card-stored) settings are kept on the card and not stored in memory. That said, if you load in a custom setting and then save it to one of the 3 memory slots on the dial, you can access those with a freshly formatted card (they're stored in-camera). My a6400 doesn't have memory settings on the dial and all of recall is handled through the menus.

There is this cryptic note with the a6700 that's not present in the a6400 manual:

Note
  • If you set [MR Recall Camera Setting] after completing the shooting settings, the registered settings are given priority and the original settings may become invalid. Check the indicators on the screen before shooting.
I'm not exactly sure what that means.

Also, while you can transfer the card-saved settings between same-model cameras, weird things might happen if you transfer them among different models.

This is what I will be doing in a bit.

More testing

I now have my custom settings for 1 2 and 3 locked in and it also sets the camera to raw and jpg.

I then removed the custom settings from the card and the formatted it in the camera and everything is working.

Down side of using the Sony version trigger is it is locking me into a 160 flash sync speed.

When using my Fuji trigger or the Manual flash I can sync to 200 and it works with not dark lines.

With the Sony trigger turned in I seem to still have my live view working so I can see moving the shutter or F stop up and down.

Now sure if its just shooting inside or not testing but the view finder seem much better on this one more clear and sharper.
