The deed is done!!

The Mac Pro, iMac and ACD have been ordered there's no turning back now. I just have to wait for the bits from Ireland, Holland and China to arrive in teh same place sometime next week :D

I've got to get my head round what I need to do now to get things forrm the Pc to the Mac, what programs I'l need etc etc...expect this to be the first post of many with no doubt simple 'switcher' questions :D

Welcome to the other side, Neo. ;-)

One of the first things you'll need to buy is the Microsoft Office suite, assuming you had that on the Windows side. I would recommend the Students and Teachers edition (assuming one of your household members qualifies) because it's far less expensive and contains THREE licenses (which can be used concurrently), unlike the more expensive "Pro" edition.

Other than that, some of your software might be eligible for "cross-grades" where you can trade in your PC license for a Mac license for a nominal charge.

Take a look at NeoOffice (an Aqua port of OpenOffice.org). It's seems to be quite good, and it's free. Can read and write MS Office docs as well.

welcome - I made the move to an imac earlier this year.

In all honesty, I found there to be much less to get my head around than i expected. I certainly havent got the hang of all the more advanced benefits of the mac OS, but for general day to day usage it is really very straightforward with a bit of keyboard time.

Have fun....

I've been playing with Open Office for the last few weeks in preparation for the switch and I find it can do 90% of everything I need its only its excell copy that doesn't always do what I want.

I know that I can transfer my Adobe licence as there have been a lot of threads about it.

Its certainly going to be a lot of fun getting to grips with OSX :)

You probably have already done this, but it is probably a pretty good idea to get something like "OSX: The Missing Manual". There is a learning curve, no matter how intuitive and nice OSX is. Baby steps!

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}

Alpha thats probably a very good idea but unfortunately I'll be working on my usual premise of 'the instructions/manuals are there when you get stuck' :d like I do with everything else! :D

I've been cruising the mac specific forums and websites for the last 3 weeks daily picking up lots of tips and tricks and informative websites plus I have a good friend in Holland who's Mac based and he already knows he'll be getting bombarded with silly questions :D

Another alternative that I have found very useful with my recently purchased 24" Intel-based iMac is Parallels software that enables me to run WinXP (and all of the other MS software I have invested in over the years) in a virtual machine. It works wonderfully. XP boots in like- 8 seconds! From there I can run office and access shares that I set up in OS X. I can also remote desktop to other physical XP boxes on my network from the XP vm.

Worth the 70 bucks. Although with OS X, I find myself not wanting to use those apps anymor. Good to have in a pinch, though!

YEP finally went for! Very excited now but just got to sit and wait for a week or two now until it arrives!! I'm even re-arranging my office in honor of the new machines! lol :D

Whats going to make the waiting worse is that my new speakers and 1.5TBs of hardrives and my monitor calibration thing all turn up tomorrow! they'll all be sitting here taunting me :)
