Guess the place #233

Where?

1c4b6ca3baad4bb287ebe49f30a019ba.jpg

We see another pair of pumps in another 1800s vintage town of similar size to the previous Twin Lakes challenge.
This wee town has a similar tiny population to Twin Lakes but is on an island more than 11,000km to the southwest. Watch out for the local version of Urtica - not mobile or carnivorous like the triffids, but with dangerous triffydin toxins nevertheless. What’s in a name though?

It's the Ongaonga General Store, from the North Island of New Zealand. Are you especially interested in gas pumps?

Spot on Mark, Ongaonga it is – named after the most common Maori name for the stinging tree nettle Urtica ferox. No particular interest in gas pumps, just happened to be identifiable objects in photos cropped to thwart the annoying Google Lens - and its followers.

Over to you.

Looks like paradise, right?

You aren't alone, as plenty of movies were filmed here.

It's not the Garden of Paradise, but it is a Capital Place. Johnny Depp might agree, if he isn't eaten by a dinosaur first.

We are well past the 48 hour time limit so a FREE TURN is now on offer.

Be the first to post a new challenge photo.

Now that time has run out, I'd add that Google Lens identified it as Allerton Garden, Kauai

Yes, if you selected it down to just part of the image. It's getting increasingly hard to avoid the Lens.

These wind turbines are located close to a long distance walking track, named after the original indigenous inhabitants of the region

The walking track stretches over 1000km from the outskirts of the state capital to a large, regional coastal town. The 4 wind turbines are located near the southern end of the track and are part of the 12 turbines which provide power to the town. The town was one a large whaling centre.

Hi Brian, it still seems to be a bit quiet around here.

I think the walking track could be the Bibbulmun Track stretching from Kalamunda to Albany in Western Australia. If the four wind turbines are near the southern end of the track they are probably part of the Albany Wind Farm on the coastal hills near Albany. But I have no idea as to where the photo was taken from - maybe someone can improve on that.

Hi Max

That's the place

I wasn't expecting anyone to work out where I took the photo. I couldn't find a street view that clearly shows the wind turbines from the Albany CBD across Shoal Bay, which is where I was standing.

I think it's over to you unless you want to call a free turn.

Yeah, I had a quick look from over there and thought the town jetty might have been a possibility, but couldn't match up the skyline.

I've already put a couple up so let's give someone else a go.

A FREE TURN is now on offer.

I was going through some photos recently and found one that Google couldn't place, and that doesn't seem to have any internal ID markers either, so I'm going to give it a try.

What place is this?

Hm, Google reverse image search didn't find it but looking at it using Chrome and GL is a different story. Sigh. Keep it in play or try again?

Hi Shane, it's probably better if you try a different one. That GL is a real pain in the proverbial and likely puts people off guessing now when it does crop up.

BTW, nice composition!

Thanks.

For those who don't have access to GL (BTW there's a Firefox addon that works for it), this is the base terminal end of the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway, a cog railway from Manitou Springs to the top of Pikes Peak, Colorado, one of Colorado's 50+ Fourteeners - mountains with elevations of 14,000 feet or higher. Pikes Peak is the only one with a railway going to the top.

I can't find a suitable photo right now so I'm going to continue the free turn.

OK, to keep it moving…

What and where?

Wales, England and Scotland could all be said to have influenced the design – in one way or another.
