Gray card proper usage

I am not going to quote such twaddle, Kent.

You knew full well that you were posting an inflammatory message. Yet, you chose to pick that fight anyways. You can rationalize that choice all you want, but you're really just asserting the right to pick a fight.

I'm urging you to make peace and be allies. This will be a better forum if you do.

Cheers,

Mitch

Dene,

I've been using a WhiBal for over a year and find it really good to aquire accurate white balance.

You will experience the same effect with different wb & tint settings when using a spectrally netural wb card like the WhiBal. The difference should be less than using a grey card, though. High ISO images will increase the difference as some people already said.

In Lightroom, you can crop the image to only contain the gray card / white balance card. That way you will get a histogram that should only contain one spike of white. Can't find better words to describe this, play with the wb/tint settings after cropping and I hope you will understand what I mean.

To me, it's valuable to get the correct white balance but in the end I usually end up adjusting the white balance to my own liking - especially for pictures containing people (skin tone). Images from a recent shoot outdoors I decreased the WB with around 500K and tint by -11.

The next step in your pursuit of correct colors is an xrite colorchecker chart. This can be used to calibrate the colors from your particular camera. Google for 'camera calibration acr' and you will get loads of good info on the subject. I've calibrated my camera and been very happy with the results. So much as I now prefer the colors in Lightroom (with camera calibration) over DPP - which is held in high regard by many when it comes to color rendering.

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to share my findings,.

Best of luck,
Jonas

gmitchel,
Then there's your e-mails to me claiming
that I only come here to lure people to my site, not to help people.
Just noticed this as I cut this off earlier, but this is the second mention of me emailing someone recently whom I haven't emailed on this subject anyway. I'd like to see the email to determine who is sending email out in my name. I hope if others have received email from me with any negative comments along these line that you'd forward it to me. I don't do this, and those who actually know me know I wouldn't, so if you get one disregard it. my email is kentlc at roadrunner dot com and I realize someone could be using that name through some proxy/anonymous server, but it isn't me.
