G5 issues?

I've posted a few questions about the G3 vs G5 vs some other comperable camera without getting the specific information I'm looking for, so here are the specific questions.

I've read that the G5 may have more noise and more purple fringing that the G3 and other comperable cameras. I'm seriously ready to upgrade from my Nikon Coolpix 990 and was ready to buy the G5 until I read this.

Does anyone have any specific examples or experiences with these or other problems with the G5? Would you recommend the camera? Why or why not?

I own a G5 and I get great results all one has to do is not point the camera into direct sun. Many just don't understand how a digital camera works they keep thinking "FILM CAMERA" They should try reading up on the subject and stop bad mouthing a very well designed digital camera.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say. Check out the images from my recent Russian trip and my latest Santa Fe Workshop images. All but a handful were made with the G5. Yes, I did pick up a touch of purple fringing when I shot directly into very bright light, but if I didn't tell you it was there, it would be very hard to see. It is inconseqential. As is the noise factor. The camera makes fantastic pictures because Canon's lens is excellent, the six megapixels are great for cropping, the menus are userfriendly and offers am amazing array of controls. Sure, it's not a digital SLR -- but it has some features like a rotating viewfinder that even some SLRs don't have. The remarkably accurate spot meter is superb. I make constant use of Canon's 24mm wideangle converter -- which zooms to 98mm. For me the camera performs beautifully in low light as well. I never use a flash in my photos, and love the soft texture at ISO 400.

Thanks, Phil. These are helpful. I don't see much sign of the purple fringing in your photos, although I do see what might be noise (or jpeg compression loss?) in some of the photos, especially the low light ones inside the cathedrals. Nice photos, by the way.

Right. Cost isn't the big issue here, as the G5 is only slightly more than the G3. The real issue is if the photo quality is higher with the G3. But I don't feel good about upgrading the 3MP camera I already own to a 4MP one (The G3). I'd rather go for the G5, but I'm still hearing less-than-spectacular reviews on the G5.

Thanks Teal. I use Photoshop for editing. I guess you'll have to ask me about a specific photo and I can give you the rundown. Unless I shoot into bright sky in the direction of the sun, I don't have a problem. I think that's about the same with any digicam. For some reason some people don't want to accept this answer and they continue to try to revisit this topic OVER and OVER again. All the while, people are displaying their excellent G5 shots. Weird.

Hello Dawn.

This isn't scientific by any means. I own 3 digital camera's G2, S45 and a Nikon D100. In all cases, I felt 100 percent right about the purchase before I bought them. I sense that you are not feeling this way about the G5. If you already own the G3, than keep it and shoot away. I also have heard great things abou the G3.

If you must have a new camera, I suggest to wait a short while and see what is coming out for Christmas !!

Confused yet? Well, I'll give another opinion from a G3 owner. I upgraded from a 1MP and had the same delima with buying a G3 or G5. They are both great cameras. I like my G3. If I had to do it again, I might get the G5 only for the 'little' more resolution as I do a lot of cropping and would gain a little more cropping ability. But, the file sizes aren't as large with the G3 as they are with the G5 which means I get more pictures on a CF card.

After seeing some of the gallaries from both cameras, it is hard to choose. I was concerned about the G5 reviews, but after seeing some of the gallaires, especially Phils', I wouldn't worry about the 'purple fringing or the noise' factors because they aren't that big of an issue.

I agree about the noise in the cathedral pictures. That noise is the most alarming thing. You see, I am in exactly the same situation: I am trying to choose between G3 and G5 and I think the noise (and perhaps the price) is the only thing that could make me choose G3. Sometimes it's ok with the noise that softens up the picture and sometimes its a question about taste but when I can see that it is the same kind of noise that I get with my 70$ Goko AF UF5 (in low light situations) I'm not pleased with the noise. I think thou I will buy a Speedlite 420EX too so I think and hope that the noise is not going to be a big problem. I think it still could be a problem in some situations. The only thing that could calm me down now is a comparison that includes low light shots from both G3 and G5, taken in the same situation. I don't trust too much what other people SAY about the noise. I have already seen that its very hard to explain such things by using WORDS. It should be showed in PICTURES. Its also very rare to find digicam reviews that includes low light pictures. Most of them is taken outdoors in bright light. That's no challenge for a digicam!

The G5 is an excellent camera, on the minuses I would say the presence of blooming in flash shots of objects or people with reflections, jewelry, glass, silverware..etc but again under the same conditions I dont think other prosumer cameras could pull it off better.

The G3 also is nice but now that price is very close and the G3 being close to extintion you cant lose by going with the G5.
