Hi,

I was wondering if anyone else was having problems buying a G2 from Australian online stores. I have asked all local online stores if they have stock, but the answers are always NO. Michaels, Ted's and Camera Action all have stock but they are all about $250 AUD more expensive than the prices offered by sites such as http://www.buyquick.com.au and http://www.ozistores.com .
Maybe I should just bite the bullet and pay more......

I have currently been waiting since Jan 4 for the camera from buyquick. Each time I ask them when I will get the camera, they say 2-3 weeks. It is now nearly 2 months since I ordered.....

I read jealously all you lucky people who already have this camera... I hope to be one of you soon!

What should I do?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone else was having problems buying a G2 from
Australian online stores.
Hi!

The next cheapest place I could find the G2 was at http://www.camerastore.com.au/ for $1829. Not sure if they have any in stock, but they did tell me a few weeks ago that they should have some by the end of Feb! I just got my G2 a couple of days ago - after having heaps of trouble getting one, my brother sent me one from overseas. Good luck, it's worth the wait!!!

i tried for many weeks in december to get a G2 from wherever i could- http://www.digicamera.com.au , my local shops. you name it. finally i managed to get it from http://www.photobarndirect.com.au (in melbourne, they shipped up to brisbane overnight, 3 days before christmas!- recommended)

i was told by the people at digicamera.com.au that they were supplied by the digital imaging division of Canon Australia, whereas "real" camera stores like Teds are supplied by the photographic division of Canon Australia. Whenever a new shipment of cameras arrives from Japan, something like 80% are distributed by the photographic division, the rest (perhaps only 20%, maybe even less) go to the digital imaging division.

this would explain why traditional camera shops have stock and many online retailers don't. just a shame the traditional retailers have such high prices and lousy websites!

my G2 cost $1799 plus $40 express shipping and is worth every last penny. great camera. if you can get it for around $1800-$1850, go for it. life's too short to wait several months to save $100 or so...

ps the tiffen megaplus lenses are great, too.

Thanks guys. I checked http://www.photobarndirect.com.au and http://www.camerastore.com.au . Photobarn don't have it on their website anymore, and camerastore offered to place me on the back order queue. I don't want to go to the end of another queue!

The latest promise from http://www.buyquick.com.au is 8th March. I guess I can wait one extra week. They assure me that I am third in the queue!

If they dont hold their promise, its off to Camera Action I go! Bugger the extra $$. I wanna have some fun!

As of 01/03/2002 the computer division & the camera division of Canon Australia are one division. With the announcement of the Black G2 (Hi Warren) a second factory in Japan has come on line, one making the Blacks & one making the Silver. Stocks of both Balck & Silver G2s will be delivered soon to Australia. Be patient good things are worth waiting for.

Dave

PS we sell the G2s $1799.00 + freight

hehe cheapest i can get is 1690 :D
g2 prices dropped so should be cheaper here soon enough?

yep, you were right dave... i concede defeat! :)

however i was "also" right in that they didnt really release a "new" G2 in terms of new features or any significant improvements... a new paint job is merely a cosmetic overhaul, no big deal for me esp as i have the silver G2... oh well.

shame they hybrid didnt' eventuate but as the weeks go by i'm leaning more and more toward a full digital SLR anyway. i dont think even a 5 or 6mp 5x or 7x zoom will do me for my next camera... say in a year i might buy a D60 or D100. i need effective high-ISO shooting (i.e. low noise, i.e. larger sensor) plus interchangeable lenses and phase-detection based fast AF...

sure the black G2 is nice if you're just buying a G2 now, but i'd be pretty disappointed they didnt fix any REAL issues... oh well, still a great piece of kit

and where are the 2 gig microdrives? dammit, i was holding out for an IBM announcement so the 1 gigs would drop in price and i could get one of them... overall PMA was a bit of a dud IMO. i do want a canon s9000 though... mmm, full bleed fast A3...

Hi Warren
I purchsed a IBM 560X laptop
233/4G/96RAM/CD ROM/USB - $700
It's 1.9kg.
Yes I know it's not a Microdive, but you know my reasons.

I do plan to get another 128MB CF card, which including my other CFcards gives me a total 160 photos in RAW before off loading to laptop.
I feel the same way as you about a Digi-SLR as my next camera.
I had the chance to swap cameras with my friends EOS 3000 film SLR.

WOW fast autofocus, real manual focus, add a lens to get that long distance shot excellent!

She was unimpressed by the G2, to get her feelings just reverse what I said above abot her film SLR.

Still there is nothing like shooting as many photos as you like and not having to worry about processing costs.
Viva La Digital.

yes, i will put up with the inferior focus (both auto and manual) of the G2 simply for the immediacy of feedback (instant), and the freedom to experiment- take hundreds of shots without caring, no waiting time for development etc.

I really think my G2 has made me a far better photographer, with a film camera i would never take it everywhere with me and constantly be on the lookout for new shots. I really ahve a strong passion for photography, in a way i never did or would have got with film. In my opinion the advantages of digital far outweigh its drawbacks.

That said, if I had a DSLR with fast AF (although D30 owners complain about the speed/accuracy, apparently it is like grease lightning compared to the G2!) and obviously better ISO sensitivity (low noise) and a mega zoom (try a 300mm USM IS x 1.6 multiplier = 480mm stabilised!) I would be in seventh heaven... film is dead. almost. the future is definitely digital. for me anyway.

ps hope to get my ewa-marine underwater case for my G2 in the next week or so.. fingers crossed

Waren,

Absolutely I agree. I have become better and my girlfriend has improved out of site and she isnt even into photography! I think mainly coz shes done what would have taken her literally 15 years of film shooting to do in a few months. Got the camera in october we have now 2000 shots. The camera has paid for itself.

With your underwater housing Ill be curious to see how far down you can take pictures before you need a flash.

Do you print with an s800?

and I did reply to you the other week but Id been away so it was delayed.

Dave & Brody,

First you get me salivating on the prices you're quoting and then you don't tell me where to look!?!?!?!!!!

FYI, my price is $1735 AUD with no extras.

Surely, you at least drop a big hint like a web address, company name or something.....

Are you telling me that you guys have stock, (or just great prices! :D)

OK, that is close to the camera action price of $1929.... they didn't offer me any better deals though, like more memory.....

Just like some of you I also had a long wait - 6 weeks - even after laying down a deposit at a reputable camera dealer here in Brisbane.

I think in Australia the DEAL is being able to purchase a G2 in a reasonable timeframe.

If you come across a G2 and you REALLY want a G2, $1695 or at the RRP of $1999, I'd be laying down the money.

As Warren said the money saved could be wasted on the photo opportunities missed.
Buy it!

yup, in 10 years time you're not going to say "damn! i can't believe i spent that extra $150 on that camera! what a fool i was!"

you're more likely to be rifling through hundreds of digital prints and thanking god (or allah, or yourself, or whoever) that you didnt wait and got the enjoyment and memories out of the camera from the word go...

buy one! black, silver, it doesnt matter. personally i like the silver, and it will stay cooler on sunny days (black body = hotter camera = more CCD noise)

Hi all,

I'm in the process of getting a G-2 after twelve months with the very acceptable Oly 3040. I'm dealing with http://www.dirtcheapcameras.com.au

If you haven't checked them you should. The price they quoted was $1700 and something, but they couldn;t confirm pricing or availability.

Now I know why. I hope the price drop in U.S will flow through to Australia. If I'm right about the great pricing I've seen from http://www.dirtcheapcameras.com.au it probably will.

Hopefully I've jumped in a the end of the wait for these cameras, not the middle.

I had the same problem in Sydney.

Best price online was 1850 with freight. Most stores are out of stock anyway so it's useless trying to haggle. But then I walked into Fletchers Photographics in Pitt St and walked out a minute later with a new G2 for 1830 (retail 2000). A good price (cost is around 1730).

Even if you pay a few more dollars I think it's worthwhile for the peace of mind to be able to take the camera back into the shop should there be any problem...

cheers

Hi,

I am sooooo excited. My G2 has just arrived.... After 2 months & 3 days of waiting I finally get to try it out.....

Tks to all the advise....

I guess I'd better thank http://www.buyquick.com.au who eventually got it to me.....

Next time I order something on the net I will definitely check stock first!
