G1, faulty pixel, keep or return?

Hi,

A couple of days ago I bought a refurbished Canon G1 from Jessops in the UK, as a replacement for my Nikon Coolpix 950.

I spent most of today taking pictures with it, and have been generally very happy with it. On looking at my pictures on screen I notice that one pixel is always pink, in the same place.

It is particularly evident on blue skies, and is very prominent when viewed at 100%

I'm thinking of returning it, I'm wondering if I might have problems returning it as it may not be considered a fault, can a faulty pixel be regarded as being within tolerance? Am I being over picky? I guess it would not take much to clone the pixel in Photoshop. Has anyone had any experience is returning a camera with one faulty pixel?
I'm leaning towards waiting and getting a G3 if I return it.
Any thoughts appreciated,
Many thanks

I bought my G1 from Jessops some 20 months ago - first one had a hot pixel as you describe, I exchanged it for another.

Jessops have a 30 day satisfaction guarantee on new goods so I'd have thought it would be the same for refurbished goods.

Hot pixels are very annoying if you're aware of them in day to day shots without having to specifically look for them or magnify the image to see them. They also cause artefact in movie mode which can be quite noticeable.

I'd personally take it back - you don't want to be editing all your images to get rid of the hot pixel.

Hot/dead pixels on the TFT display screen are a different issue and often fall within 'tolerance' specifications.

I've just taken it back to Jessops and they have refunded my money

Julie,

As someone who would like to upgrade from a G1 to a G3 if the price difference isn't too great, I'd be very interested to know price Jessops were asking for a used G1? It would help me know what mine is worth.

Many thanks

The refurbished G1 was £339 including a full 12 months guarantee, which I thought was a pretty good deal.

S40 also from Jessops, dead pixels in the sky, notice them on blow ups, should I take it back?

I would, I took along a few pics I took, they were viewed at 100% and the sales person at Jessops had no hesitation giving me my money back after looking at them , and that was with just one bad pixel.

Thanks - that does indeed sound like a good deal for what is still an excellent camera in my opinion.

As a matter of interest, I had to return my G1 to Canon a few days ago because of an outbreak of hot pixels that I found on photos taken on a recent holiday. I do hope they return it soon - I hate to be without it.
