FZ300 macro with flash - brightness issues

I am a Panasonic FZ300 user, and I’m very happy with its performance. I usually take macro photos of small invertebrates in natural light (with a Raynox DCR-250 attached), using shutter priority mode (depending on insect speed and available light) and Auto ISO with a limit.

Everything works great, but when I was taking photos at night using the built-in flash, I noticed some strange behavior from the camera. Most of the photos turned out extremely bright (almost completely white), sometimes they were fine, and occasionally some were darker. Adjusting the Flash EV didn’t help…

It was only when I reviewed the photos that I realized the bright ones had high ISO values. So, I changed autoISO to ISO 100, and only then did the flash photos turn out okay (and when they were too bright or dark, adjusting Flash EV helped).

I thought for a moment that I never had this issue with my old FZ50, but then I remembered that I always used ISO 100 on that camera (since Auto ISO was probably limited to full AUTO mode, so I didn’t use it). Also, the flash didn’t have many settings on the FZ50, and since I rarely use the flash, I never really explored its settings on the FZ300.

A question for experienced FZ300 users – is this behavior normal (and should I simply switch to ISO 100 for night shots), or did I miss some other setting? My flash is set to TTL mode.
