I don't know how many of you have been following the efforts of bobn2 and others to bring up an alternative site.

Three proposals have merged efforts.

The new site will be DPRevived.com, not as originally advertised PhotoForums.com.

There is an interim site https://cameradiscussion.createmybb4.com/index.php hosted by Alansh. This can be used for ongoing discussions. Registrations and posts will be migrated to the long-term site.

ComeHither has created a registration page for the new site. This will be available on DPRevived.com when the name servers sort themselves out. During that the email [email protected] won't be reachable, so pleas have patience.

I'll post again when it's back.

Also, we've been in toch with Soencer and Nasim at Photography Life. They are also proposing a solution, hopefully that will be included under a single banner.
To me, it's important to try to keep the community together. The size and depth of the community matters a lot. It's important to have the lighting experts around, and stills folk who may have a lot of expertise with cameras used for video.

In particular, to me, it's essential to have the real experts from Photographic Science and Technology around, to keep everyone - including me - honest.

This works both ways. Eric Fossum said that it helped him to see questions from folk with little understanding of sensor design. In the same way that a university professor might find undergraduates' questions thought-provoking.

As far as video goes, I propose a forum called "Moving Pictures".

If that seems strange, my rationale is that quite a few of the problems that folk have asked about on "Digital Video Talk" are not problems specific to video or digital video, and have occurred, and been solved, many decades ago, on rotating shutter film cameras, and the solutions are essentially the same for modern column-parallel active-pixel CMOS sensor cameras.

Wishing all y'all good light,

John.

Would folk round here be OK with a forum named "Moving Pictures" ?

If all y'all think that's a silly name, or just prefer something else, then post here.

Otherwise, I'll ask alansh to Make "Moving Pictures" Tomorrow evening UK time - if someone else hasn't asked him for a different name first.

The forum creation thread on the temporary site is here: https://cameradiscussion.createmybb4.com/thread-2.html

Looks like there are various replacements in the works at this time. bobn2 has this one going with all the old familiar categories https://dprevived.com/categories/

This section of DPReview is one of my "go to" sections here when I visit the site, and although it's usually not all that active, I'd like to see it continue somewhere.

I really don't care what it's named, it's about the content and participants. That said, "Moving Pictures" seems unnecessarily "retro"...we're in a Digital world.

What I do care about, greatly, are the site aesthetics and to put it bluntly, DPRevived in it's current incarnation is, IMHO, a visual stick in the eye. I don't know if that's caused by the forum software their using or just their personal visual aesthetic, we all have one, right. The site elements, section headings, sub-headings, icons, etc., all take up far to much screen real estate and are not organized for easy browsing as are the forum sections here and most other sites...including alansh's Camera Discussions site. And my biggest pet peeve, no black background. I've let Alan know my thoughts, but he's not sure what can be done with the software package they're developing the site in.

Anyway, my $0.05...if you have opinions, I suggest you share them. Personally, and I know from experience, site design and the UX can be a huge factor in success or failure.

Cheers!

My first reaction when I finally looked at it was "wow that's the worst implementation of Discourse I've ever seen" - but it's Misago which I've never heard of before. Has some UI elements which kind of remind me of Discourse but... Yikes, the similarities end there. Not particulary impressed.

Lol... you 0.05 cent are sure not helping anyone. Those guys at DPRevived are working hard and are still building that site ... it's under construction. They had less than 25 days, Dpreview had 25 years.... just go somewhere else if they don't serve your needs!

If Alan's thoughtful and considered - and correct - feedback is not welcome, the site will never improve and will not succeed.

How hard the 'guys' are working is not in the mix. If visuals aren't a priority now, fine, but simple rejection isn't helpful.

The fundamental problem is that, like many people, they rushed to have something NOW and are competing for users to be the "one" DPR successor.

Which I suspect is why they'll all fail.

Instead, it should have been:

1) Find a location off of DPR where the "DPR Successor" can be discussed. To keep things neutral, NOT a location that is in the running to actually be a DPR Successor. This allows discussing relative pros and cons of various forum software, etc.

2) Plan, Plan, Plan.

2b) Fail to plan, plan to fail

I was going to bring up being a "temporary host location" with the moderators of a photography forum I participate in, one that very specifically has NO intention of ever becoming a DPR successor by virtue of that forum (pixls) having a very specific niche (open source software for photography). But due to a mix of people rushing and DPR's horrible auto-lock of active threads, we now have a mess of 3947320970492 different candidate "DPR Successors" competing with each other.

I'm well aware of the sites going through development and I've registered at both DPRevived and Camera Discussions and made my feelings known.

I make my comments here to bring up what I see as shortcomings and hope others will do the same. There is no sense getting in a rush and starting off down a path with what I and a sizeable number of others feel is a poorly designed site from a useability standpoint. Get the look and feel right from the get go and then bolt it all the underpinnings together once you've got that worked out.

And yes, I will absolutely go somewhere else if I don't like the site aesthetic or ease of navigation. I'd be perfectly happy if the look and feel of Camera Discussions could be ported over to DPRevived, right out of the gate Alan has put together a look and feel that, to my thinking, is head and shoulders above what they're faffing around with at DPRevived. 5 different "Look/Layout" options that are user configurable. Unfortunately, they're two different software packages with different capabilities.

UI design is really subjective and everyone rates it differently, of course, but for me unless it's pretty darn egregious the community is a lot more important that the side design. If you've got a lot of friendly, contributing folks then that's where I want to be. It's one of the things that made DP Review worth hanging out at. The biggest reason I'm moving my shingle to DPRevived is because I'm getting the sense that it's where most of the folks I'm familiar with are congregating.

It takes time to build a community, we'll have to wait and see how it goes.

What about the rest of us duffers whose videos are rather bland and not particularly moving at all? ;-)
Hah!

Well, I can make some really boring videos too!

See:

After watching that on a loop for a few hours, quite a few people would be moved to a Dignitas Exit.

...

As it happens, I'm interested in animation as well as shooting video with a camera. Animating mathematics, and a little stop-motion animation. Fairly snore-worthy for most folk. I don't think I'll be putting Studio Ghibli out of business.

But I get what you mean about the phrase "Moving Pictures". It was the best I could come up with that did not refer to "digital" or "video", and, as I wrote before, I think it would be better to avoid that. Then I have STEM degrees. I should maybe ask someone with an English Literature degree or two.

OTOH, there is DVXuser.com. And - sadly - not a lot of posts there are about DVX100's.

Lighten up, mate!

I thought I had a dark and pessimistic view of the world.

This will all sort itself out. But it will take a little time.

It's always been good to hear what you have to say, even if we don't always agree. I hope we remain in touch.

Meanwhile, here's a few movies to cheer you up:
  • My Neighbour Totoro
  • Mon Oncle
  • The Apartment
  • The Philadelphia Story (1940)
  • Charade
  • Intouchables
  • Arsenic and Old Lace
  • Some Like it Hot
  • Duck soup
  • Singin' in the Rain
  • I Was Born, But...
