Flip out & twist LCD vs pocketability

Thanks Ron I will try that! : )
Turn the sensitivity up to 400, set the focus to soft and contrast
to low, use a monopod to support the camera, then use NeatImage
(Freeware: http://www.absoft.nm.ru ) to clean up the noise. NeatImage is
slow, about 3 - 4 minutes/image on a 1.7 gHz P4 computer. You will
need to sharpen the image. I use Magic Focus, as it also helps
remove camera motion defects. (www.magicfocus.com.)

Best regards,

Ron
Am I the only one who does not mind carrying a camera that does not
fit in my shirt pocket?

What about ability to use an external flash, and remote control?
I'm struggling with the decision between the pocketability of
S30/S40 vs the extra features of G2. Of these features, the flip
out & twist LCD on the G2 (and coming soon on the CP5000) seems to
be especially attractive. Seems like you could get shots you'd
otherwise miss (over heads, around corners, ...) and also be very
creative with it.
  • Has the LCD been a deciding factor for any of you? How important
is it in practice to you G1 and G2 users?
  • Has the larger size of the G2 been a problem for any of you,
leaving you wishing you had an S40 in your pocket instead of a G2
at home?

Thanks.

The cats eyes are closed because the blink at the pre-flash, and the eyes haven't opened fully before the main flash. If you use the AE lock that will trigger the pre-flash, then you can shoot and the flash will fire only once. I haven't done this myself, but search the forum and I bet it's somewhere in the manual too. Glad you're enjoying the camera, I remember how you were agonizing waiting for it to arrive (a common occurrence, I beleive)

As I woman, I wouldn't carry the S40 in my pocket anyway. The G2 is
not that big. I just need to find the right case for it because I
will be adding the 420 ex and some filters, etc. I LOVE my G2!!
Still so much to learn - like how do I shoot my cats in low light
without flash and get enough light or use the flash without my
cats' eyes closing!! Haven't figured that one out yet!! So new to
this!!!
Leezah,

Easy answers:

"shoot my cats in low light w/o flash" -- turn off the flash by
pushing
the "lightning bolt" button until you get "lightning bolt in a
circle with
a diagonal line through it", then the take 'kitty' pictures
galore.......
......and, yes, I know you know how to do that!

"or use the flash without my cats' eyes closing" -- this is even
easier,
'scotch

tape'....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Yes, I am kidding(^ ^). I guess you will have to increase the
amount
of ambient light and see my first (1st) answer.

Hope this somewhat helpful.

PS: I would say 'have fun' but it would be redundant.

I'm delighted to see so much enthusiasm for the G2's flip out & twist LCD, and such agreement that its value outweighs the value of the S40's "pocketability." Thanks you all for your helpful comments.

I tried out the G2, and am surprised by the lack of comments concerning the LCD viewing angle (or maybe I haven't read enough of the forums yet). But, while the LCD is extremely sharp and vivid, the image can also be hard to see. What I mean is,

The LCD screen didn't work as well as I'd hoped when pushed back into the camera body. It seems the viewing angle of the LCD was only decent from "the top"...i.e. when the LCD is flipped out. If closed against the main body of the camera, facing outwards, it is necessary to view the LCD straight-on or hold the camera up in order to get a clear view.
I don't know how people who wear bifocals manage with non-flip out
LCDs. When I fold mine flat against the camera the only way I can
use the LCD to shoot is to hold the camera up at eye level and tilt
my head back so I can focus on the screen. With the LCD flipped out
to the side of the camera I can hold the camera at chest level and
tilt the LCD so I can look down at it through the bifocal part of
my glasses. Get the G2 - someday you'll need bifocals too. I
solved the pocketability problem by buying a leather pocket with a
belt loop (its called a digital camera bag) - it can also carry a
spare battery, my remote, another CF card, and a few other small
items.

Ditto here. Thanks all for a good thread. I had considered the same choice, and am leaning very strongly towards the G2 now.
