Please see my other post for more detailed history of focus problems.

Called tech support this morning complained about focus issues with 17-40L and 24-70L lenses. have already had my camera serviced once after service camera focused perfect with 5omm lens. After testing for many weeks without problems felt it was safe to take the plunge into the L lens universe.
Bought the 17-40L lense noticed 3cmm back focus problem at all focal lenghts!
Told the tech support person i needed to talk to supervisor.
They told me just to send the camera in.

I told supervisor the camera should work out of the box with any canon ef lens and asked her if every time i buy a new lens do i have to have the camera serviced? I asked her if she could replace it with a 10D that worked. She gave me the number of NJ facility and told me to talk directly to them.

I was on hold for 30 min finally got a person who said she didn't know enough about the focus issues to help me. She took my phone number

I recieved a call back from a supervisor at the NJ factory who was well aware of the focus issues with the 10D. She told me i needed to send the camera back for repair with the lens. I asked her if every time i buy a lens will i have to send the camera back she told me no. I asked her how will this time be different from the last time a few months ago? She told me as of last week there is a software upgrade which will solve the problem.

according to her this is new and was not available until last week. I asked her why than they needed my lens as well she had no good explanation. she told me if i sent my camera back with my lenses everything will work well and in the future any new lens i buy will work fine without needing adjustment. I asked her if the L lenses will be misadjusted for film cameras . She told me they do not adjust the lens just the camera? I asked her what does the software upgrade fix she told me the specifications? I than asked what about if i use a non-canon lens she told me canon only supports their own lenses and that the other companies do not have their new specifications.

So in summary according to this supervisor at the NJ facility there is a software update that was released last week and in order for the update to be corrctly applied i should send in my canon D10 with my lens and thereafter it will work fine with every lens i buy made by canon and that this software update was not available before last week?

What i also felt is a very poor reflection on canon is that they will not pay for shipping . The problem is obviously their fault this is ridiculous. Just to compare with another company when my apple laptop needed repair the next day apple sent me a box to ship it back to them the box was sent to me overnight mail at no charge to me 3 days later my apple laptop was in possesion working perfectly. Considering the price of the 10D and L lenses canon should be ashamed of their support and custumer service!!

Bill,

I read something here about this. I think it is a software update on THERE equipment. The camera is tested by computer and adjusted without taking any pictures for a tech to evaluate.
Can't remember who posted this info, but it sounded like the solution.

You know, people that bought Ford Explorers for $30,000+ a couple years back found a minor glitch that cost them their lives. People that buy $130,000 houses find out weeks later that there are snakes in their backyard.

Then you buy a piddly $1500 camera and throw a fit "after weeks of testing" to find you're OFF BY 3CM??? THREE CENTIMETERS ON A WIDE ANGLE LENS??? T-H-R-E-E CENTIMETERS??? For one, Canon support showed their willingness to help you out and you turn into Barbara Walters overnight, whose sole purpose in life is embarass degrade and patronize her guests publicly under the false cover of journalism. This is NOT an expensive camera, it's a budget camera that Canon made available to you. They could very well have charged $2k for it and still be sold out nationwide. If you even pay $500 in shipping charges to get your anal focussing "problem" fixed, you're fine.

For one, Canon Support aren't the people you complain to. Go to their website, send feedback - if you're so hellbent on tearing into the support guys, don't expect them to want to help you. Job or not, they're still people with no control over the situation. I can only hope you've sent food back at a restaurant and have been treated to human waste or some other godawful treat for your immature brat attitude. Send in your camera, it'll be fixed.

My friend :
I use the camera for medical imaging to document patients conditions

focus is critical i have had the problem with 24-70 as well as 50 mm lens if you had read my post.
If you do a search you will find many people with the same complaints.
Why should i have to pay for shiping for a defective camera 3 times?

and i think if you were a patient of mine you would be glad that 3cm is important to me. PS i asked the camera rep from canon if i should be using the 1ds since focus is critical in my line of work they told me the 10D should be more than adequate.

I would not compalin if this was a one time problem with the camera problem fixed everything ok. 3 times is not acceptable. The cost of the camera should not be the issue.

PS
i have complained to canon
the purpose of the post was not a complaint
the purpose of the post was to alert other canon users who have the same problem
that their problem is real and canon recently has come up with a fix
a $1500 camera is not a "budget camera"
many people who use this camera rely on this camera for their work
canon should support their products and stand behind them

having to send a camera in for repair several times in the last couple of months and have to pay for shipping is not good custumer support.

I'll back up Paul's claim. I believe the software update is on their side, and it's supposed to help them calibrate 10Ds. It's not a firmware update. Then again there could also be new a firmware update, but that should have nothing to do with fixing focusing problems.

why do they need my lenses?

The tech told me the problem is with the camera and they don't adjust the lenses. once they spec out the camera i would think it would then work with all lenses?

This is NOT an expensive camera, it's a budget camera
that Canon made available to you.
The 10D is not the only Canon D-SLR suffering from Canon's inadequate AF design and QC. My 1D needed to be sent in three times before it focused right and my 1Ds is on its way to its second calibration. And yes, Canon ought to pay for the shipping.

Regards
Stefan

Because they need to make sure the lenses are in spec too. If all of your lenses and your 10D are within factory spec theoretically you should have a working system. This was not the case in my situation, but I'm guessing it works most of the time. That way when you buy a new lens (as long as it is in spec) it will work with your 10D. It's not that they are adjusting your lenses to your 10D or vice versa. They just want to cover all the bases.

I have to admit my first reaction was "what is this guy doing using a 17-40 for documenting patient conditions?". I decided I better do some research. It turns out the 17-40 can focus in as short as 28 cm. I changed my mind.

Ouch! 3 cm when you are focusing at 28 cm is a huge deal. Perhaps you aren't focusing in quite that tight but still you could easily be in the 5-10% error range which would be BIG deal.

Is there a work around? I think this lens can be used with full time manual focusing. If so you could use the autofocus, a quick twist (of about the same amount) to compensate for the back focus, and you're ready to go.

If it isn't FTM then you would have to throw it into MF mode and twist but that might still be usable depending on how fast you need to capture this stuff.

I know the possible work around isn't ideal and I feel for you. Having to pay the shipping stinks for something that should be right out of the box 8(.

That is a lot of money for something that doesn't work absolutely right.

that their problem is real and canon recently has come up with a fix
Actually, it sounds like the new software eliminates the tech's subjective conclusions from viewing photos after a calibration. As I understand it, no photos are required with the new software. This should make the calibration process far more consistent and reliable and take one more variable out of the process.
Hopefully you will be happy with the results.

When I first got my 10d my Sigma 15-30 front focused badly my 28-135 was right on but what upset me was that my newly aquired 70-200L back focused at 70mm only.

Not wanting to be without my 10d for any amount of time, I sent them my lens for correction. It came back and now is acceptable. (slightly front focuses but still within DOF).

My subsequent purchased 17-40 and 24-70L focus have been dead on. (thank God!)

Anyway it does seem that some of the focus problems can be in the lens.
Still upset me that an 'L' lens would need to be fixed before I could use it.

My10D was sent in to have the focus screen replaced. The screen just popped out while using the camera 2 weeks ago. Since I was sending it in, I asked that they calibrate the focus. ( I had a slight FF issue).

Good for you doc. I have never been so frustrated with a camera before. Mine is back in Irvine for the second time. I get the feeling that Canon is on the verge of making us happy with a fix. I love the camera as long as I don't look at half my shots. In the meantime I must tell you that because of some serious shooting coming up I purchased a Nikon D100 and I am smiling from ear to ear with the results. I have two other Nikon cameras and guess I am a Nikon sort of guy now. But....I hope they fix our 10Ds. It has great possibilities. k6pwp

Bet they have an in-house 'loose lips' policy the CIA could learn from however.

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1029&message=6033288

They say they doesn't care about DPreview.com, they doesn't have any new software, they doesn't have a focus issue with 10D.

It doesn't metter they did already calibration for my 10D in May - my camera should be readjusted. Steve( Canon rep.) told me that I have to send just body (???).

I told him that my body focusing fine with my 50/1.4,100/2.8 Macro and 28-135IS and that I have a problem with 24-70L at apertures 3.5 and 2.8 and focal distance less 35mm.
He said it's very unusial, they never heard about that - send your camera.

He didn't recomend to send new (if I'll buy it) 24-70L,because lens very expensive....??? Just if I want!

bla-bla-bla

My10D was sent in to have the focus screen replaced. The screen
just popped out while using the camera 2 weeks ago. Since I was
sending it in, I asked that they calibrate the focus. ( I had a
slight FF issue).

I'll be taking a ride to Canon to pick up my camera tomorrow. I
have a friend that works at the front counter, and I'll see what he
says about this software update.
Bet they have an in-house 'loose lips' policy the CIA could learn
from however.

Too many cameras ... not nearly enough photography.
