Had several Canon DSLRs dating back to the 30D. 8 year old 5D Mark IV started to malfunction - would no longer communicate with flash, and would not rotate vertical images during playback. Probably got rained on during Friday Night Lights one too many times. Got a big job this weekend, so could not risk the 5D4 failing me. Traded it in at a local chain for $600 plus a $200 trade in incentive and walked out with a new R5 Mark II. So far I'm very impressed. Basically the same resolution as my old 5DSR but more forgiving like the 5D4. I felt the 5DSR suffered from shake too often. DPR's test shots show the R52 has significantly more resolving power than the 5D4. I thought I would miss the OVF more than I am. I guess my eyes have deteriorated enough for me not to notice, lol. Went out today at lunch to try some of my usual spots for test shots. These were all taken with the sharpest lens in the world, the Canon EF 50/1.8 STM. ;-)

Big congrats! Looks like you're enjoying your new camera.

I would suggest pairing it with DxO Photolab to get the most out of your images. It really adds a lot of capability.

Have fun!

Thanks! I use Lightroom. It's what I know.

So, this camera does not rotate vertical images during playback if I turn the camera vertically. Is that normal? I have it set to on in the menu.

I find the immediate feedback on exposure and 100% coverage from an EVF outweighs any possible downsides vs. an OVF. Especially with the excellent quality of the R5 Mark II's EVF.

On the khaki spanner setup menu 1 it's Auto rotate and you have the choice of On camera+computer, On computer or Off. At least that's what it is for other R series cameras.

Except that, now I come to check on my R8, if I have it Off the image always fills the screen, while if I have it On camera+computer, portrait orientation images only take up 4/9ths the area of the screen whether the camera is held in portrait or landscape orientation; in other words they are Auto rotated to upright provided the camera is freight way up in landscape orientation. That's why I leave it set to On computer.

Yeah, it's won me over. Although I'm still getting used to the behavior when I put the camera up to my eye, and I see the last image taken, or a black hole, if I do not half-press the shutter first.

Half-pressing will also kick on the IS as well (very important in order to avoid delays).
