Fine Mode vs. Standard Mode

How much difference in quality is there between the Fine and Standard mode on the 717. I notice the size of the file is quite a bit small on the standard mode.

A lot of people find that they can't tell the difference.
Some people on this forum always shoot in Standard.

If storage is limited, out of reach. unavailable, it's better to shoot in Standard and get the picture than be in Fine and not get the picture.

Quality.....hmmm.....try some test shots indoors and out in both modes and then decide. Be sure you compare the pictures at 100% when viewing or your viewing program may just average away the differences.

as stated below, there is some debate. nice thing is that either way, the images are darn nice.

in reality, it's what works best for you in the situation. I work off the basis that I better capture as much as I can while I can. When possible, which is pretty much all the time for me, I shoot in Fine mode as regardless of what the final outcome is, fine captures more data and thus can only be better.

memory is inexpensive, but then other factors do play in. nice thing is that many of the very respected folks on this board who know lots more than I ever will, do enjoy standard mode shooting.

--I use fine all the time I have 6 memory sticks and plan to buy a couple more.
