I take a lot of pictures at the beach, which polarizing filter would be best for an Olympus 3040, and do I need a step up ring to go with it? Thanks
in advance.

Following several threads on the topic in this forum, I got a circular polarizer (there's more than one kind of polarizer and it appears that the circular polarizer is the right sort for many digital cameras--circular being a reference to the way in which it polarizes the light, not its shape :-). The filter size for the particular lens is 49mm; filters come in a variety of sizes and I bought a 49mm filter. No step-up ring needed in my case.

I bought a linear polarizer following the analysis at http://www.cliffshade.com/dpfwiw/c-2000z/filters/index.htm#polarizers Apparently only SLR autofocus cameras need circular polarizers. I found I had to lower the brightness on the LCD and view with an extendaview adapter to see the effects of the polarizer. Works great.

Laurel,

Depending on the filters that you choose to use, you may or may not need a step-up ring. But, you will DEFINITELY need a lens adapter tube before you can attach anything to your camera. I'd highly recommend checking out the following link before you make any filter purchases.

I have a 2040 and I use the Oly CLA-1 adapter with a 43-46mm step up ring, a tiffen 46mm UV protection filter, and a tiffen 46mm circular polarizing filter. I don't have any vignetting problems, but I do get some flash blockage if I am at full wide-angle using the onboard flash. But, I don't typically use any filters in flash situations so it's not too big of a deal.

The tiffen filters aren't the best that money can buy, but I think that they are a fair balance of cost and benefit. I got a kit from amazon.com that included a UV protection filter, 812 warming filter, and circular polarizer all for $43.00. I thought it was a pretty good deal.

Laurel,

I concur with Jim T. that a linear polarizer works great. In fact, I find that my linear works better than my circular polarizer.

Why I really wanted to comment here was to say that whenever I take a picture with my polarizer, I take a second one without it. The effect of the polarizer is to darken the sky. I find that the polarizer often overdoes it. On a white sand beach, this could be especially true. By taking photos both ways, you can choose the one that looks best.

I have a 3040 and I use the Oly CLA-1 adapter without any set-up ring, but I use only Hoya Sky 1b filter. Works good for me.

Some people reported that they have a problem with using Tiffen filters without set-up ring on CLA-1.

I may sugest to use CLA-1 and only Hoya filters if you do not want to use set-up ring. This combination tested on Oly 3040.
