When shooting CAF,, slow burst using my Oly m1m3 or OM1 mk1 and a couple different Oly telephoto lenses, I have noticed quite a few soft pics even when the subject is not moving. Center AF box. I tried removing the haze or similar filter and the number of soft pics seems less when no other settings have changed. Is this possible or my imagination? The filters are various brand names from known filter makers.

HI

First of all do you need filters, and second you don't mention which kind of filters. CP-l -ND- UV - skylight or something else ?????. I don't think anyone can help you without more information

I don’t know if it’s still true but phase detect used to get blocked by non-circular polarising filters other than that I’ve not heard of any filters causing an issue with AF.

I have used a few quality filters on the MZ 100 400, I haven't seen any different performance cf without a filter.

I think you're just experiencing the typical AF variability of the OM System IMO.

Just persevere to achieve 😁

Cheers

It's an issue with DSRLs because they use beam-splitting to accommodate the AF module. Mirrorless cameras with AF on the sensor don't have that vulnerability and can use linear polas.

Anecdotally the Lumix 100-400 is very picky about filter quality and can have focus issues with some.

My 300/4 and 40-150/2.8 always have a filter and focus reliably. I still think it's possible for certain camera-lens-filter combos to have issues "just because." Experimenting with and without is a good way to learn which.

Filters were all UV type. The possibility of more misfocused pics was always at the more extreme FL. I think I will reinstall the filters because I like protecting the front element of the lens.

I have experienced this and now only use protective filters on shorter primes and zooms, never for telephoto lenses.
