Faking Snow

Jane:

I believe it is in the layer box top left hand side where it says normal, click there and a drop down menu appears and I saw pin light there in my travels with this. I am still not getting the effect but there is the weekend to get it right. Hope I am right. Good luck.

Where do I find the last step listed "set current layer to layer,
mode: pin light". I have even done a search for "pin light" in the
Windows version of PS 6 and it found nothing!
Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Bob, thanks for trying -- I still can't find "pin light"! Is this by any chance an abbreviation that I as a relative new comer to PhotoShop am not familiar with? And, once again, I am also wondering if version (in my case 6.01) and OS (I have Win 98SE) enter into what is where.

Jane,

I don't have it either (pin light).......so.....you're not alone here. Tried other blending modes and don't get anything close to the effect that Bijan and Cassandra got. Think I'll just go back to my "color range" and do it the hard way.....but effective.

Vernon,

Thankyou! Your compliment means a lot to me.

Here is a sample of one of the snow actions I created. I'm putting
together a package of various amounts of snowfall for both vertical
and horizontal images for myself, but willing to share when
complete.

Hello Marlene,
I just want to compliment you on your "Snow Effect". It is a
pleaseure to view an image that has been enhanced by the proper
additions of selected effects -- and ALL without "deforming" the
beauty already present in the scene that was provided by "mother"
nature. VERY VERY NICE....

It appears that I am out of luck in using Bijan's method. I have PS v6 that I am using with Win98SE and v7 is out of reach because my computer is not powerful enough for the mim. requirements (on top of what the cost of buying v7 would be). I will keep Marlene's more tedious method in mind; but do any of you have experience with anything else to use with PS v6 & Win 98SE?
Thanks
Jane
Pin light option was not in PS v5, it is in v7. I don't know about
v5.5 or v6

Hi everyone,

I tried some of your tips about making snow and I noticed that some work with some pics and not on other.
I made my own if someone would like to try it.
Open picture
Add a new empty layer above it
Fill the empty layer with 50% grey
Make all of this on the empty grey layer:
Filter/pixelate/pointillize cell size: 14
Edit/fade - keep it at 100% but change the mode to luminosity
Filter/pixelate/christallize cell size: 6
Filter/Blur/Gaussian blur 4
Filter/Blur/Motion blur angle: 51 distance: 9
Change the layer mode to Lighter
Lower the opacity, on this picture it's 82
Adjust levels on this layer only. On this picture I used 40/1/239
Merge layers
For a cool effekt, BEFORE you merge the layers:

Copy your original layer and put it above the original. Change the layer mode to multiply or color burn.

Have fun - let it snow!
