Either I'm stupid and/or too tired (3:15 EST) and forgettign something or my shutter lever is stuck on closed (the lever moves but I don't see any pic or digital readout). I can take pics just fine and batteries are 100%. I was using the lever to try out the (in)famous dead pixel test this a.m. ... hmmm...

Any thoughts or similar observations appreciated ...

Hi,

That lever only closes the eye-piece and prevents light reaching through backwards to the CCd.Its like putting a cap on the eye-piece, TO find dead pixels you put the cap on the lens,

Hi James,

I'm not sure if I understand your question completely.

Are you talking about the shutter release button is stuck? If so, I was checking the manual in the trouble shooting section, and it might be your card is full.

Or, are you talking about the eyepeice diopter cover is stuck in the closed position?

Get some sleep. Check it in the morning, and if the problem still persist's try posting here again.

Vance.

Thanks for the fast replies !! ....

Nope - the shutter release works - I can take perfectly good pics framing with the LCD (my 128Mb card shows 68 HQ free - I also tried the 32Mb supplied SM)
Or, are you talking about the eyepeice diopter cover is stuck in
the closed position?
Yes ! At least thats what it appears like to me.

Unfortunately the clear light of morning has not shown the situation to be different than a few hours ago. If I point the lense to the sun I can just make out a bright light in the viewfinder (it's real faint though, must be agood blind !).

I'm about to go on a 2 week Asian trip too (figures, right this is the first time I;ve had any probs since I bought my E-10 a few months ago !)- guess I'm gonna see what Oly TS can do for me in 1 week.

Dang James,

I wished I knew what to tell you. Maybe one of the veterans around here can help you out. I'm lost. :o/

Sorry,

Alright, I talked to Olympus ... they concur that it's a mechanical failure on the lever as originally suspected.

I'm a little disappointed to say the least especially because of my imminent trip (haven't talked to service yet but seems unlikely that they will get it back to me in 6 days) but on the bright side:

1) I'm the only one I know who has seen this problem (so it's probably very rare)

2) I'll take it as a challange to produce killer pics with LCD only in Thailand and Japan.

3) The E-10 is still an awesome product and this is an AWESOME newsgroup - thanks to everyone !

If I get one or 2 good ones in my 2x128Mb and 2 weeks I'll post then for critique when I get back :-) !

Cant you use the LCD viewer for your trip?

Where you going? Drop me an e-mail if you'll get to Taiwan and maybe we can go on safari.

Wish I could do Taiwan too but no time this time (got a 2.5 year old daughter issue too !).

Yeah even at HQ with 2x128Mb and a 32Mb thats about 170 - guess I'll just have to be fussy and edit well 'on the trail' also my Dad is in Bangkok and has a decent PC + CDRW so I hope to unload to CD after 1 week. Thats the plan - wish me luck !

No prob. Brian. Yes, I'm concerned about the old power drain with all-LCD action so I'm packing 3 sets of CR-V3's (as well as my Nimh's), I found a pretty darn good price $7 at (they arrived sealed and fast nuthing shady !):

http://www.neiparts.com/specials/batteryspecials.html

A lot of others suppliers (even if they had them in stock) want $12 -> $20 !!

James,

In the interests of your health and/or potentially ventilating the back of your retina and maybe your head, though, do NOT point that big piece of glass directly at the sun and look through the viewfinder unless you DO have the eyepiece shutter absolutely closed - and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't do it even if I THOUGHT it was closed.... If the focal point is the back of your eyeball, old Sol will render you instantly blind when condensed through a lens.... Couldn't be good for the CCD either...

Hey Dr!

Ya, roger that, probably fair comment ("don't do this at home kids !") - don't worry I pointed it a couple of pretty strong light sources before the big one 93x10^6 away!

Again, at the potential expense of my health I can confirm that it's a damn good curtain Oly put in there - the sun was barely a glimmer :-)

-------------------------------------------

Turns out that:

1) Oly service says they average a 2 week turnaround and they couldn't be bribed (I tried!).
However ...

2) Yesterday I went to take a vertical shot (via LCD) and the curtain popped half-back - more jiggling gave a clear viewfinder (I had tapped and jjiggled the lever before but stupid me never though ot reoorienting the whole camera before !)

Soooooooooo, I'm back in biz I think - I'll save the repairs till after the trip now I have no excuse for taking awesome pics, lights, camera -> Action !

James,

Whew! Don't scare us ol' HMO-chasers like that - biggest sunspot in the history of the Universe s'posed to occur soon, too... Had the same thing break on my F3 once, though; pretty uncommon I think.

Allan;

Ha ha ! Yes, I heard about that sunspot activity, bet the commercial RF comms/ham radio guys are not liking it too much !

Interesting to hear it happened on an F3 - OK, thats pretty good company, correlates with the ongoing assumption of rareness !
