external flash

Hi there, I am wondering if I am a auto point and shoot kinda gal can I use the sunpak 144 with the camera having everything set to auto except maybe the flash or do I have to do everything manual? Thanks for your help before I order this.

I'm pretty sure you're talking about the 602 here, and if so, the answer is NO, you can't use the 602 in AUTO mode and use an external flash at the same time. See page 33 in your USA user manual for a list of available options for each mode. You'll see that the AUTO, SP, and Movie modes disable the external flash.

I need just a bit more umph in my flash for inside pix and though that would be my answer but not don't have enough knowledge for manual picture taking. Maybe I could just juice up my flash a bit. Thanks for repsonding. I do thank you for it.

Marilyn,

Generally speaking, you'll want to shoot in Manual mode when using an external flash. While it's not that difficult, it's certainly not point & shoot. See pp. 56-57 of your user manual for more tips on using the external flash with your 602.

You can get a little more oomph out of your built-in flash, but don't expect miracles. Here's a link on how to get a little more pop from your flash:

Marilyn,

You really do not need any real manual picture taking skills to use an auto flash unit. All you do is set the camera to manual and set the aperture setting to the f-stop recommended by the flash (it's in the manul as to how to set your aperture), then set your shutter speed to 1/400th, turn on the flash and shoot away. The flash takes care of all the automatic functions for you. All you have to do manually is get the right shutter speed and f-stop set in the camera.

Besdies, it's digital, just play around with a bit on manual and experiment....it's not like you are wasting film!

But most of all, have fun!

You can use the P, A, S, and M mode with the external flash.

The manual p.56 recommended the use of A, and M mode, while many here in the forum recommend the use of M mode for more control.

Marilyn,

John has given you some good advice. Once you set the camera on manual and match the settings recommended by the automatic flash unit then everything will be automatic. Just remember not to use a shutter speed over 1/1000 sec. If shadows from the flash are too harsh just use a slower shutter speed so the available light in the room will wash them out a bit.

The tape trick that others recommend will not make the flash more powerfull just trick the camera into running the flash at full power sooner but that limit as to what full power is will remain the same.
