So recently I took a trip to Utah and went into the Narrows. I had on my Peak Design Everyday bag with my Sony A9. Well I thought the PD bag was water resistant so when I fell in the water, for about 3 seconds, I didn't think anything of it (yes I know water resistant is not the same as waterproof but it was a quick fall and the bag wasn't even fully submerged). When I got back to my campsite, I took out my camera and didn't feel any moisture so I continued to turn it on. When I turned it on, I got a message saying "INCOMPATIBLE BATTERY USE CORRECT MODEL" I was confused because both of my batteries were legit Sony batteries. So I turned it off and took my battery out. I noticed some moisture in the battery insert bay. The battery was a little bit wet. Then I noticed a few other areas with some moisture, such as the hot shoe, flip screen area... So I dried everything as much as I can, placed the battery back in and still got the same message. So I just turned off everything, took the battery out and opened up everything door/flap/plug ports and let it sit inside my car (the area I was at had a lot of dust). The next morning, I checked my camera, everything seemed to be fine. So I put a different battery in just to test it out and the same error message came up.

I've checked to see if the battery connectors were damaged and they were not. It doesn't seem like there's any salt or residue in the battery insert. So I plugged in the wall charger and plugged the USB cable into the charging port of the camera with the battery. Turned it on and still getting the same error message. My batteries were fully charged or at least at 90%.

So I let the camera sit and continued my trip in Utah without taking any pictures. Got home and finally got some ear swabs with some alcohol and clean anything out. Let it sit overnight. Turned it on again the next day and still got the same error message. After this point, it would have been 4 days since the incident started. I have charged up all of the batteries and they both still gave the same error message.

I've thought about placing the whole camera in a rice bag and let it sit but I didn't like the idea of little rice and whatever powder or dirt from the rice getting into the openings.

When I turned it on, the screen works for a brief moment before the error message popped up. The OVF is working too. I don't know what else to do. Can anyone help? ideas?

Sometime placing the affected area under a lamp overnight is enough to dry it out, but if that doesn't do it - Send it in to Sony for repair.

Might have nothing to do with water, could be impact damage from dropping it.

Try a reset, if that doesn’t fix it call Sony and arrange a repair.

It was never dropped. But yea I've tried to reset it by pressing the power button.

You guys have any experience with sending equipments to Precision Camera and Photo Tech?
My a7s went swimmming in the Colorado river but luckily the tripod legs popped up as it got taken downstream and I snagged it out. I dried it over a heat vent for a week before putting a battery in it and kept using it for another 6 months before the grit in the shutter caused it to fail and I sent it to PhotoTech.

They replaced my main board, viewfinder lcd, internal battery, another board, and the new shutter, plus a few other things I forgot and it ended up costing me about $600. I am glad I did because I basically have a fully refurbished a7s, and my shutter was probably close to failing anyway. I did have to send it back to them after their first attempt to repair because when I got it back, it wasn't saving my settings after I'd turn off the camera, and needed the board for the new internal battery. They did this free of charge since they should've done it the first time around. Good repair work in my opinion. That was 2 years ago or more.

Thank you for your reply. Yea I've read some really bad experiences with those shops. I might just bite the bullet and send it to them. When I spoke with them on the phone, they seem pretty professional.
Let us know how it goes.. I'll be curious.

My camera battery too ...Just like your battery :(
Please let me know if any information is available.thankyou

I just had a NP-FW50 battery for my A7RII do this. The battery when inserted to the camera starts fine and gives live view and just after that I get: "INCOMPATIBLE BATTERY USE CORRECT MODEL" on the screen.

All other batteries I have works fine, so it is only this battery that behaves like this.
I only have original Sony batteries.

The original charger starts to charge this battery and does that for a short while and then starts to blink instead.

My multicharger says 100% charge but claims the battery is a Sony NP-BX1 battery which it obviously isn't. If I squeeze on the battery a little in the middle it changes to say that it is a NP-FW50 after all, but then that charger also states that the battery is bad.

I checked the contacts, cleaned them etc, no change.
This battery was one of the two that came with my A7RII in the autumn of 2015 when I bought it so it has been used alot.
I guess this is how Sony batteries eventually dies.

I got 3 original Sony NP-FW50 batteries. They used to work ok on my A7RII and A6500.

A few days ago I started Charging the batteries for my coming fall shot, two of them become "enlarged" and stuck in the camera battery compartment. One of them started charging awhile and blink, never compete charging.

The hole getting smaller, or the battery getting larger, or the charger getting tired, or problem words can't explain? Too Confused??? Time to get some new batteries??? My Leica original batteries got similar behavior . . . OMG.

I haven't had any swelling with Sony original batteries, at least no yet, my oldest are from 2015 and then a I have bought some used ones I don't know how old they are.

The battery that died and don't charge is one of my original ones from 2015, I know that since I took a picture of the serial numbers of them and saved that.

I have had four Jupio battery clones of NP-FW50 that swelled when they were brand new, I returned them.

I had a dream last night. Instead of trying to make the battery smaller, how about making the hole larger.

Inserted the battery, turned on the power, focus, hit movie button, until the camera overheat, and turn off. Turn on the camera and repeat the process: the camera was hot, the hole is hot like burning, God blessed. Can't do anything with the blinking dead battery. Fingers crossed.

That's modern technology. Too many un-explained un-expected hurtful consequences.

Amen, Steven
