Last night while I was shooting hockey I got an ERROR 99 message on my 40D. It said to reinstall the batteries. After I did that it was fine. I use a 70-200 2.8 lens which I've had for about 5 years and have never had problems with it. I've had the camera since August. This is the first time this has happened. Does anyone know what causes this? It was the first time I shot with a Sandisk ULTRA II 4GB card, I usually use my Lexar Prof. 300x 4GB card, don't know if this could be an issue. Thanks.

can cause an Err99 on the camera. It is a generic error, and come up for a wide variety of reasons. I had several of these errors early on, and attributed them to not shutting off my camera when changing lens. It could have been something else though. What causes it for one person -- won't necessarily be the cause for another person...

In my particular case however -- by making sure that I shut off the camera when swapping lens, it hasn't happened again. YMMV

Thanks for the tip but I moved on after it happened. I was just curious.

I opened up the aperture on a bright day so the shutter speed got too high to handle. Instead of giving a warning, it just gave err99 and told me to switch off and on again. I went back and deliberately did the same again and got the same err99.
I've also had several other random err99 also.

it happened to me once while i was outside on a bright sunny day i got this message

i did uninstall the battery cleaned the battery and then inserted the battery..so far no problem...make sure the battery contacts are clean..this could be the problem

programmed to do. Figure out another way, and move on.
Trolling this thread too?

As others said ERR 99 is a generic error and can mean anything. It may mean that you did something that the camera isn't programmed to do. Or it could mean your camera is defective or almost anything in between.

The ERR 99 on my first 40D happened fresh out of the box with a fully charged battery. It happened whenever I attempted to turn on the camera, no matter what lens was mounted. No matter what CF card was mounted. Or if no lens or CF card was mounted. It simply didn't work. Do you mean to say that my first 40D was programmed to be a paperweight, because that's all it could do.

On my previous Canon digital model (not a 40D) Err 99 was caused by an AF lens that was failing to AF. When it started going bad, cleaning the lens contacts helped. Once the error occurred, removing the battery (forcing the camera to reboot) was the only solution.

I would update to the latest software release. I have been running it for several weeks and no problems.

There was a problem with the firmware that came with the first 40Ds when used with the Ultra II cards and some others. I experienced error 99 with an Ultra II but found that formatting the card two or three times before use stopped it. However, since the firmware update it hasn't reoccurred.

Had that on my 20D and formatted card and updated firmware, now its gone.

I, too, was shooting hockey. Maybe it's hockey? 8
I got it every time I took a picture.
I changed the battery to a fresh one.
I changed lenses.
I left it overnight.
No luck.

I read some of the posts on this forum and started with the simplest proposed solution. I formatted the card in the camera.
It went away!

I updated the firmware to 1.0.5 anyway and I'll clean the contacts on my lenses and the camera.
I never would have believed that re-formated the card would have. but it did.
I'll update if it does again tonight. (Basketball, so I should be ok!)
