Hurray, I think I finally figured this one out.

How to make any lens sharper

Take a photo, any aperture any lens. Print said image, post on the wall. Step back 3 feet... voila much sharper. Cost $0

How to get less DoF with M43

Take a photo, any aperture. Print said image, post on the wall. Step forward 3 feet... bingo less DoF. Cost $0

How could I have missed that all along and so why are we so hung up on M43 vs FF sharpness, noise, DoF and equivalency. The problem isn't the size of the sensor or quality of the lenses, it's how we look at the images..! Buy any format any lens, use any aperture, adjust viewing distance accordingly, problem solved, size of the sensor or cost of the lens no longer matters :-).

P.s. yes... it is kind of a troll, just venting having been sick for 3 weeks and bored wasting my precious time wanting to go out and take photos, feel free to ignore this post on the futility of our argumentations.

Print viewing distance does matter. It's in the equations and changing the value changes the result.

Once I started viewing pictures on retina screen, I stopped pixel peeping and even my budget lens miraculously turned to be good. The same is with print. On a 24" FHD screen I still can see pixels at my working distance and cannot help zooming in. This results in viewing at 100% scale, which is not good at 20" distance.

Absolutely. It affects composition too - what you can’t see isn’t there.

You have exactly defined why phones will do the job most of the time, but sometimes only an IQ4 150 will do. Also, sharpness and depth of field are in competition, unless you use a tilt lens or stack.

I definitely agree with the spirit here, but the reality is if you’re comparing MFT vs FF “on the wall” you’ll still see the difference people talk about. DoF calculations ultimately are based on a “circle of confusion” in the context of a particular print size. 🤷‍♂️

That said, everyone chill out with MFT vs FF. Horses for courses, etc. 😂

Please get unsick and get out and about again.

Then we will be spared this sort of thread. :-)

All the best wishes for your speedy recovery.
