I made the same point about two weeks ago. Your camera is NOT defective. This camera has a hard time with certain shades of purple and turquoise.
I'd send those pics to Canon and see what their story is.

The sofa in the picture is GREEN.
Yet the D30 gave me BLUE.

I did manage to correct it in the "selective color" in PS by adjusting the green and blue levels

Hey Alex,

If you have shot these in raw, maybe try using the white balance eyedropper and selecting the truck in the background or the white parking strip on tlhe ground. This will shift the colours and may solve your problem.

Other than the color shift, the D30 looks much much better than the Sony's.

Try this:

In PS go to IMAGE-> ADJUST-> SELECTIVECOLOR-> and choose the CYAN and then Move the MAGENTA slider to -40. My correction of the Canon is shown below:



Basically it is a "notch filter problem" in that you only want to affect a narrow range of colors. If you adjust the whole image it does not work.

I have noticed a similar problem in low light with too much Yellow. I find I have to notch filter out yellow with a Selective Yellow and Yellow Minus about 10 to 20.

The good news is that this seems to be a firmware/software problem that COULD be corrected. I would be interested to see what would happen with a comparsion to a coverted RAW image. The algorithm seems to be a good bit different.

While this may not explain the sofa picture later in the thread, I wonder if a high amount of UV may be affecting the color. What is the altitude in this scene? Have you tried using a UV filter?

Can't say for absolute sure, but I never use auto white balance outdoors. For all my Zion pictures I shot in RAW and converted using Daylight for all outside pictures.

If your image is RAW try the daylight setting. My hunch is everything will turn out just fine. Auto does the best it can, but like an auto camera, it makes compromises. Your Sony may do better in this example, and do less better with other lighting. The beauty of shooting RAW is you can pick other color balance settings after the fact (failing that, it's an easy fix in Photoshop to adjust).

I think Karl has the only solution. I photographed some children in my studio on a green scenic background mostly on film and then a few shots with the D 30 the film shots were fine the background on the D30 shots went blue .I shot in raw mode, a good skin tone on the children left the background blue ,selective color adjustment is the only fix.BTW i am also finding some metals going blue instead of gray I am a proffesional photographer and I am very careful in what i do having shot transparency film for 20 years .Hope i can find a simple workaround. film also can shift colors on certain dyes and inks. this is not just your camera .

I wonder if there are some notches in the spectral response of the imager/firmware combination. Of course, the spectral content of the light affects things too. Generally I have been very pleased with the color output of the D30.

I may try taking some pictures of a color chart to see what turns out, but it would be interesting if someone has done this with professional quality. I would also like to find a plug-in for photoshop that would let me work on the spectral response, similar to an audio graphics equalizer (actually I would like it to be more of a curves like control than sliders).

I did return EOS D30 to hte store. I'll wait until Canon release firmware upgrade or did come up with some fix of this problem. I don't have time to tweak every image with selective color adjustment. I do mostly batch process. Is anybody knows when Canon will release patches or fixes

I used to have the same problem with my old Olympus C2000z. Then Olympus corrected it in the C2020z. So there is a fix

It bothers me to have to deal with that in a 3000.00 camera!

Can you imagine shooting a wedding where all bridesmaids' dresses came out blue instead of whatever color they were supposed to be?
Its inevitable and bound to happen.

Secondly, you returned your camera, so you're kind of out of the loop on this (that is, Canon won't pay too much attention to potential owners of their cameras).

I did return camera in protest to Canon. Why they don't test it before release. It is rip off of us.
Nice idea - Digital SLR.

I will buy again after color problem fixed. And if all Canon owners will do the same - Canon will respond quickly.
Who knows, may be Canon will ignore it?

Did you send the RAW file to Mike Kelley so he can see if it's a problem with white balance? If you cared you would try to see if you did something wrong. Maybe you didn't do anything wrong, but it's always best to find out, you know?
