EasyShare software Version 4.0 now available via download

I really wanted to like this version... but iPhoto is still much better for the Mac user. iPhoto works
with iDVD, iMovie, DVD Pro, Final Cut Pro and others.

Kodak makes a great DC for the avg user and I love my DX6490 but the Mac software is much better
IMHO.

PC guys will find love this upgrade.

Thanks Kodak!
Windows version 4.0.2 and Mac version 4.0.1 are now on the web. I
suggest you download those and you're problem will go away.

If you're running without crashing on either windows or mac, you
probably don't fall into the very narrow group of people who got
hit by this. But, upgrading is probably a good idea.
I know that a bunch of people on this forum have asked me in the
past to notify them when the new version of EasyShare software
becomes available. We released on our web site this morning Kodak
EasyShare software V4.0.
It was working great on my G4, but yesterday it started crashing on
launch and nothing on the computer has changed. Errrrrrrrr

The web is trying to get more and more "User Friendly" However, it seems like this is always true:

"Making things EASY for the Inept Users usually makes it DIFFICULT for the Advanced Users."

Oh well.
thanks for the answer - hope you've got the bandwidth costs
factored in as I'm part way through download no. 2!

as for the cost issue whilst I understand what you're saying I
really can't see how putting the full file on an ftp site and
giving people the option to download would cost more money over
posting cd's (no cd available on the kodak uk site at the moment).
As I guess the cd provides a full install version, you are all
ready producing the required version, therefore there is a marginal
cost advantage to providing a download over a cd! (sorry the
accountant in me occassionally surfaces).

IMHO I think that whilst kodak's aims to hand hold and make digital
easy is a reasonable aim - However, this ignores the fact that a
lot of users are more than capable of doing a download / save /
install - in fact it implies that kodak users are some how
technically stupid - perhaps because we chose easyshare camera's?

Cheers

Ian
The long answer: (1) my budget has only so much in it for
releasing software. (2) each release costs money, so if I do a
monolythic download install and the install-from-web install,
that's two releases and (3) the previous versions that we did have
a downloadable file made the phones ring with people telling us
that they downloaded but couldn't find the files. The phones don't
ring with the install-from web nearly as often.

So, it's a prioritization and cost issue. I try to balance the
spend on putting new stuff into the software with the abiltiy to
get it to people. We do offer a CD for sale for (I think) $7.95
that covers our cost.
I have to say I am a fan of easyshare - never had any problems with
it BUT

I take it that we still have to use the poxy auto installer - why
can't we download the complete program ?

I have easyshare on 2 of my 3 pc's (1 work/ 1 home) plus 2
notebooks (overkill I know but we have 2 camera's and my kids like
to keep their pictures on their own machines plus I take my
notebook away on holiday with my camera - downloading the same app
4 times is absolutely bloody stupid. Also my folks have a kodak
camera and don't have internet access so I have to bring their
laptop to my network and install it! (OK so that makes 5 downloads
  • plus doing it again if I buy a new machine)
"EASY SHARE" software should be easy to share not involve pointless
downloads - thankfully I have broadband - but thats hardly the
point.

If the software can be put on a CD, then surely it can be put on a server that people can download ?

For those of us who can use two or three brain cells and find software we've downloaded off the net, this option would be far better.

I know that a bunch of people on this forum have asked me in the
past to notify them when the new version of EasyShare software
becomes available. We released on our web site this morning Kodak
EasyShare software V4.0.

What's included:
  • much tighter integration with Ofoto including a new express
upload feature that allows you to upload entire albums from
EasyShare and to keep track of changes on the desktop that can then
be propagated to the Ofoto service with the touch of a button. If
you add pictures to an album that has been uploaded, the next time
you update the album only those picutres that have been added will
be uploaded. Your Ofoto username and password are remembered so
you only need to supply it once and all subsequent interaction with
ofoto is seamless (where ofoto service is available)
  • Ofoto powered email - instead of sending your photos as
attachments, your recipients will now get an invitation to view
your pictures on a secure location on Ofoto. This eliminates the
worries about email not getting through due to ISP email limits and
allows your recipients with dialup connections to not have to
download all of the pictures to view them. (where Ofoto service is
available)
  • increased support for Burn CD through the integration of Sonic's
burn engine. Many more CD-R/RW drives will be supported with this
release.
  • Much more "album centric" in the design of the software
  • Windows standard selection mechanisms for selecting single and
multiple images
  • drag and drop support from EasyShare to other applications
  • the ability to re-arrangephotos within an album
And of course, a littany of bugs that have been reported here and
elsewhere have been fixed.

As always, this is a free download from Kodak.com. If you have the
automatic updater service enalbed, Kodak will start spooling
updates on the 17th of this month.

I downloaded the file and tried to install and it said it was going to install CleanSkin for digital cameras (which I already have, but downloaded again anyway). On checking my version of Easyshare it is still 3.1 and not 4. The downloaded file I got from clicking on the link was called install_easyshare.exe. Am I missing something here?

Thank you Bill.

I upgraded the EasyShare software from V. 4.00 to V.4.02 on my wife's computer. It was an easy upgrade once again. (I just had to select "Modify" the program this time, during the installation process.)

She wasn't having any problems with V.4.00, but I figured that it is a good idea to stay up to date!

Hi There Bill,

sorry for 'trimming almost all of your > message
BrianHare suggested I contact you!

I am a new member, I received my DX6490 on Saturday-great camera- but problems with EasyShare!

I have tried to load ver3.3 as supplied with the camera and also ver.4 downloaded from Kodak site.

I almost reach the end of installation when I get message that installation has failed with Error Codes 12x 413x 1722x. When directed to the kodak site I can get no answers. I e-mailed Kodak on Sunday - no reply yet.
My computer is up to date 2200 Athlon XPPro etc.
I have put off buying the camera dock till I sort out the EasyShare problem.
Can you help

regards
Zack

I've got a request into engineering to see what that TriCode means.

this makes no sense.

The install_easyShare.exe runs our installer that is hard coded to the Kodak web site for the packages that it has to download. Can you contact me off line and send me (ZIPped if you can) the install_easyshare exe file that you have?

thanks

The problem is a "general installer failure" reported back from the Microsoft Installer (MSI) system.

can you look for and send me the file :

c:\EasyshareInstalllog.txt

This will give us much more data as to what happened.

Thanks

Bill, Thanks for your response,

I cannot find a logfile, I have also tried to create a logfile following instructions from Kodak FAQs.

The installation fails right at the beginning of the actual installation -after the transfer of files from the disk- not at the end of installation as I originally suggested.

When I stop the process right at the point of "installing Easyshare" after all files have been transferred from the disk - I immediately get the 'failure and error codes' indication
I am assuming that no logfile is created at that 'stage'

I have Serif 'Photomanager 1.00 installed' I am now going to remove that program and re-try to install Easyshare, as in my experience 'Serif' programs can alter settings in their favour.

Bill,

Please disregard my previous reply regarding logfile.

I have found a EasyShareinstall.log by looking for it manually - 'search' did not find it.

I have sent it to [email protected] by e-mail (in my own name Angus Read) I could not figure out how to send it to you direct via forum. Its a biggish file (642Kb)

I have 'completely' removed Serif Photomanager from ny system - with no effect - I am still unable to install EasyShare - same tricodes !.

I may still have some remains of (old) Kodak Cd photo software plus all the debris from my installation attempts with EasyShare, on my computer- will this affect new install? should this be 'cleaned' out?

Zack

I disabled the auto, too. I am using 4.0.0.130

When I look at the download at the Kodak website, it lists 4.0 being available, without specifying which 4.0...

4.0.2 is on the download site right now, but it says 4.0 since we don't really publish anything beyond the first two digits.

the update fixed two odd bugs that we found after we released the initial download. One had to deal with people who had installed V2.0 and had upgraded to 2.1 and then any version of 3.x

the other had to do with having an & in a caption causing uploads to ofoto to fail since the XML stream uses the & as a control character.

Both have been fixed in 4.0.2

Ooooooo. That explains why I've had a failure trying to upload one particular album.
