(runing jaguar g4 466, pioneer dvd burner) When I try to burn a dvd via toast
titanium I get half way through and get,
(Sense key illegal request, sense code=0x21,0x02,buffer underrun).
I can burn a dvd if I run os 9.2
I have upgraded toast etc, any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

I'm new to DVD-burning, but have you tried to burn in x1 speed? I've heard many reports of bad burns due to faster speed. I think it was the same disease the CD-burners had in the beginning.

Check the memory allocated to Toast (select the icon and use get info 'apple key' and 'i' ) and give as much as possible
Then in the Toast Edit menu Preferences give it a large amount of Ram Cache.

Assume you are doing data backup -- i.e. backing up data onto a DVD. I recall somewhere that the Pioneer 105 drive needs OS X 10.2.2 or 10.2.3, although I could be wrong.

I just installed the Pioneer DVR 105 into my G4 400 AGP and it has worked perfectly with Toast 5.2. I'd check both the Toast and Pioneer web sites for any tech support. Also use the 2 MB data buffer option when you burn from Toast.

A buffer underrun usually means that Toast cannot get it's data fast enough.

Some possibilities:

If you are copying from CD, DVD or other external drive straight to the DVD, then your read drive may not be fast enough. This may also occur if the burner is on the same ATA bus as the read drive (Are you copying from a 2nd HD that is installed under the DVD in the tower?).

Possible Solutions:

First things to try:

1. In the Toast burning window, ensure you tick the "Buffer Underrun protection" checkbox.

2. Set Toast's RAM cache as high as possible

If this fails:

Turn burn speed down, copy files to main HD first. Do a Check Speed test first.

Also, turn off screensavers, and do not run any processor-intensive apps while the DVD is burning, such as Photoshop, inDesign, games, Seti-at-Home etc.

You answered your own question.
Burn the DVD in 9.2

I see it everywhere.
It's hard to deny.
OSX is NOT ready.
I love my Macs.
Best machines ever.

BUT....
OSX is about a year away.
Maybe 10.5

(this is where poeple chime in, on how they kant use 9.2 anymore
blah, blah, blah.)

Hey, 9.2 works
In a year, I will switch.

DING-DONG.....

Just chiming in.....

I use OSX (10.2) almost exclusively now and generally find it better than OS9 (especially stability), but, to each his own.

Jamie -- I am with you. I use Jaguar exclusively now, and everything works perfectly including my new internal Pioneer DVD burner which replaced the CD drive in my G4 400 AGP. OS X never crashes, the software is very solid, etc. etc. I have been a Mac user since 1986 and OS X is the best OS -- at least since 10.2 came out.

But as you say, to each his/her own. While we Mac users may thumb our noses at Windose, we should be very respectful of our OS 9 brethren. (Actually, I have learned to respect XP).

I have had no problems with OSX, I am getting so comfortable with it, I forget to save photoshop files for days (I work on several at a time). I had a demo version of vectorworks running and developing a cabin for over three months. It just does what I want. I haven't been back in 9 for a very long time. Not at all since photoshop 7.

I have found that many times people starve the system of memory. Toast has been vernable to this in the past. When I upgraded to 1g, the system became incredibly stable - and fast. (g4 d533).

In general, people who are using OS 9 are best qualified to have opinions about OS 9. Which is to day, if I lived in the early 20th century and had a question concerning a horse and buggy, I would go to a blacksmith, if I had a question concerning a automobile I would go to a mechanic. I suspect it was not unusual to hear blacksmiths talk despairingly about the "horseless carriages." OS X is very different, but with every new release is becoming more stable than any of the previous Mac OSs.

I don't think what we are seeing here is a OS problem. I suspect it is a media-related speed of burn issue, as mentioned by one of the early posters. But, all of the suggestions (with the exception of the rather luddite, operating system suggestion) have been great suggestions that can't do any harm anyway.
