DPReview Shutdown Thread - Nikon Z

It's run by a photo oriented company (Smugmug) and it has some decent social aspects, plus the image sharing is easy and great. It just takes time to find the groups that fit you.

That's enough for me to run >>>> and stay far away from it.

You'll probably see a little more emphasis on polite discussion on both of those sites than we have at DPR. Both are trying to make interaction pleasant for everyone involved while still allowing free speech. BCG has a specific rule against Brand Bashing and Nikon has a similar approach.

If anyone has any questions, contact me directly.
Might as well make question public as was post. When there are issues with brand, and person owns lots of gear from brand, does rule apply when it comes to criticism of brand? As examples: Past repeated delay of Z 70-200mm lens or Paperware Z 200-600mm f/____ lens.

Or is rule about Fanboys of Brand C or S, posting in Brand N (aka Nikon forum)?

We get the "result", but why do we not hear the real reason behind this decision ?
Corporate cost cutting by Amazon (led by the finance people) is the logical explanation. Whether DPR was making money or not, it was likely not contributing enough to key Amazon financial metrics to justify the focus and headcount and ongoing expenses.

A big company has certain financial metrics that it shoots for and every-so-often, the overall economic conditions cause the company to re-evaluate what businesses and projects they are investing in and whether it continues to make sense to support those. DPR apparently didn't pass muster in one of those reviews.

Since Amazon bought DPR in 2007, it's not clear whether the objectives/goals for it have just changed or if DPR just failed to live up to the original reasons for buying it. I would guess it was the former (goals just changed) and Amazon itself is a vastly different company now than it was in 2007.

When a book publisher goes belly up, you will still have the books you bought.

With DPR shutting down a lot is lost. Just look at these posts:

And thousands of others. Lost!

So, a website is not a library that you can rely on. Before you know it, some bean counter decides to be penny wise and its gone. You can also not count on your documents being safe in the cloud.

Big thanks to all staff and contributors.

Posting again as I meant this as a general reply to the thread.

While I will miss the reviews and the other content, what I’ll really miss is this forum or, to be more accurate, the people who post here. I’ve learned a lot, I’ve enjoyed seeing your posts and your photos. Let’s hope we can find an alternative and we can all meet again.

Sigh.
DPR was one of the first sites I logged into every morning since 2007. The reviews and data helped guide me into the digital ILC world back then, and I relished the technical discussions that went on in this and other DPR forums, like Photographic Science, Retouching, and others. Marianne Oelund's PDAF deep dive from 2014 made me a lifer. Fortunately that thread has been taken up by PhotonstoPhotos.com, but all the other posters I've enjoyed - horshack, beatboxa, bobn2, the list is huge - now vanish into memory. What a loss.
On the other hand, perhaps this will give me more time to practice photography instead of participating in the community. It's not like I NEEDED more camera gear...just encouragement.
To all who I have agreed with, disagreed with, learned from, taught, and laughed with:
Thank You. May your art always be in your images, and your joy in living always visible.
Peace.

I think the manufacturers are also big lovers here, this was a great place to view new product announcements.

I wonder if any other website has the following to make announcements worthwhile.

Not surprising with this horrible economy.

Hope everyone on staff makes out ok.

Honestly, if I had a fiver for every time you have brought up the paperware Z 200-600.. f/___ lens, I could buy this place myself.

The other forums are OK, I have been on most, probably like Miranda the best of the rest, but the activity level just cant match this place. That's the part I will really miss.

There is so much content here, seems weird that Amazon would just throw it away, but it is probably just a rounding error for them and why bother?

So long friends. See you out on the street/ trail/ at the event. Wishing you all the best lighting conditions. Will miss your weekly photo submissions the most. Be well.

Wow, didn't realize DPReview was hogging so much of Amazon cloud's server farm.

I think they're laying off the wrong folks. Could lay off who ever made this decision as they obviously have no business sense. Probably went to Harvard.

So sad.....it all started for me here back with the D200 / 18-200 combo <3

If not already mentioned, nikonites.com is a small friendly forum that could use more membership

Combined with:
John Blackledge, an analyst at Cowen & Company, estimated in December that if investors stripped out the profitable cloud computing and advertising businesses, the rest of Amazon, which includes its retail operation, studios, devices and other consumer efforts, lost more than $25 billion in 2022.
Dpr did so much for me. I will miss you all. Happy shooting.

Shockingly Sad and disappointing...I have learned a lot from other members here and hoped that I have contributed some to somebody along the way....my 94th 1st place winner might just have to stay there....I was hoping 100 before the end of the year, but that most likely will never happen...
