A very quick question of taste. Look at this photo:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jason_hindle/2556144755/

I can't stand it (really, it's just a test photo and I've done nothing to advertise it other than put it in the Flickr set I set up for my 25mm test photos) and yet it is currently one of the most viewed photos on my Flickr account.

I don't get it. I post all sorts of c* p to my Flickr account and photos like this usually have a viewed counter close to zero. It gives me a sense of order since you can't beat the viewing public in these matters.

What could possibly be right with it? This enquiring mind needs to know...

it has something to do with your line that says "a first attempt at editing in Picnik "

Honestly, I don't like the shot much......sorry :) But as you say, it's merely a test shot.

But I have noticed the same flickr oddity, I've got a photo with well over 2000 views, and when I look back on it, it's pretty average. It's always the ones I least expect that end up doing well.

It's annoying knowing that there's so much more to offer, yet people are missing it with alarming regularity.

I definately think flickr should have some kind of rating system, like YouTubes. It'd be interesting to see whether high viewing figures actually lead to satisfied viewers!

That might be it. it looked ok on my home monitor but far too dark on my work monitor, so I experimented. Thanks - I forgot how much of what we do is searchable.

Thanks and agreed. I have the same experience but never so extreme. As per first reply to my OP, the bit I wrote about using Picnik makes sense in this case.

Shots that you'd never expect to get looked at end up really popular for no good reason.

Here is an interesting little read -
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/27/magazine/27wwln-medium-t.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Go through the days explore pages - some of it is very good but a lot of it is the same cross-processed or fake HDR or pregnant moms/babies/scantilly clad women or someone making a heart symbol on their stomach or some hyper saturated narrow DoF flower or shots with texture and real film like noise added or worse test shots.

I saw one test shot of someone taking a pic with his new 50/1.8 a month or so ago of a Chinese lantern - the background in black with some OOF highlights. That is it. I think it made it to the top ten in explore. He even said it was a test shot in his description. Heck my top three most popular shots are all long exposures. I set the camera up and pressed the shutter and had a nice sit down while it collected light. I don't count any of them as a favorite of mine.

It is a silly place - do you like your pictures?

Cheers,

Some peoples photostreams have countless sycophantic comments for (IMHO) boring photos whilst I've stumbled on other people's pages with photos that blew me away that have nary a comment.

My most viewed photo only has 63 views! I'm not sure I can be bothered playing the flickr popularity game though.

One, at least: The colours. I actually like the contrast between the light greenish glass and the violet booth. (I might even have took it upon me to try and correct barrel and perspective distortion, to see if the picture might gain from it...)

Cheers,
Robert

Yeah, I know what you mean.

I do play with a small group (about 6 active people) once a month and joined loads of groups in a frenzied session once - but otherwise I don't have the time or inclination to play the game.

I used to have a pic that had over a 1000 views because I had a tag called: "sexy"...needless to say it was a shot of a very sexy women.

If you take away my Tennis event pics and the pics from my small group then my most viewed is 43 (flower pic).

I've tried other photo community sites but have stuck with flickr for 2 reasons:
  • the most users means the most data (checking pics taken with obscure lenses etc).
  • upload up to 200 pics at 1mp each for free (most want your money sooner).
To the OP: I have no idea either:)

Interesting NYT read. Favorite part:

"Maybe it’s no surprise, then, that when a prankster posted a Cartier-Bresson photo of a cyclist passing a spiral staircase, passing the photo off as his own, a mob of commenters shouted it down, crying for it to be deleted. “When everything is blurred you cannot convey the motion of the bicyclist,” one commenter carped. “Why is the staircase so ‘soft’? Camera shake?” wrote another. “Gray, blurry, small, odd crop,” someone concluded. That seemed to be the final word."

Here's a blurry shot...

... the naked lady up on the 10th floor....JK :> )

I also like the blend of colors, though for me it's the green glass and reddish buildings...

It might have been that people were doing a search on that lens and your photo came up? No comments so maybe that is it?

Anyway, it's probably going to get a lot more now. I just clicked the link. lol I posted a squirrel shot here once in a joke thread and it got like 900 views in a couple hours. It is still my number 3 viewed of all time.

I don't know why its the most viewed. However, I am a big fan of poles getting in the way of shots, so this one really is a great shot IMO. The composition of the pole's intrusion into the scene is impeccable. The pole speaks to me. It is looking to the left at the brick wall and saying, "Hey, we belong on this photo". They are like the yin and the yang of the photo.

Have fun with the pancake!

And things are getting a bit strange there, hence my move to ZF.

Sometimes a really average photo gets very high in the rankings, and you wonder why...

The purpose of flickr is sharing. It's a bi-directional thing...treat you contacts well, and even your average or below average pictures will get some serious audience...

The problem with that is that yu have to spend a lot of time on flickr, at least on your contacts photos...i prefer to do other things.

Lots of contacts, means lots of views, comments, favorites, invitation to special groups, etc...

In the end, that does not mean anything to me anymore, the excitement has passed. the special groups or invites are not special anymore, the comments get more and more stupid, etc etc etc...

There's still some pretty famous people from the first hour there - look at miss aniela for example - who are so famous they don't need to take care about contacts anymore.

Flickr popularity is quite easy : post one photo a day at the right time, post in lots of popular groups, give a lot of comments and favourites (and i mean a lot), and your popularity will skyrocket quite high. But week after week, it's very time consuming, and puts me off now...

The only good thing i've had with flickr were a few nice encounters, and some sales contacts.

Anyway, to come back to your picture : i like it, there's a good contrast and colours, it's quite modern in a marketing or advertisement sense. I wouldn't give it a first prize in a contest, but i understand it makes people look at it, and that's all what counts on flickr.

Cheers,

Marc

And what a strange place it is. And its true as others have said in this thread - from time to time I fall upon on a photo sublime beyond my meager capabilities with not a single comment (I've handed out a few faves on this basis).

I actually have a Smugmug account which needs tidying up so it only has my best stuff. I think Flickr will remain the place where I put any old c* p though.

Obviously one doesn't have to like HCB, but just the fact that people who are supposedly interested in photography didn't even recognise one of the more famous HCB pictures pretty much sums it up.
