I started the camera using the 16MB stick and it wasn't enough.
Bought a 128MB and I was able to get 50 Fine pix on it. It wasn't enough.

Got a 2nd Memory stick for my trip to Hawaii. Two sticks using Standard setting was enough for 1 day of shooting.

When it was on sale, I decided to add a 3rd stick, and it turned out that it was enough for most days. But if I wanted to do Fine, then I'll need more stick.

Got the 4th stick so I can finally use Fine mode, and it turn out that its still not enough for one day of shooting.

How much is enough for you?

I have four which seems a good number for me. I shoot in full res/fine and get the nominal 50/51 shots per stick. This generally covers about 2 days of active shooting.

A recent addition of a 30gig X-Drive II solved the extended trip problem.

I started off with the 16mb stick that came with my F505, or was it the 707? Then added a 32, a 64 and a 128. Never thought I'd really need the 128 until I started shooting find 3:2 shots. I realized that when I was out on a shoot I could easily fill three 128 sticks. But when there were on sale...I bought more...and now I have 8. When I travel they come in real handy. I can shoot for a couple of days, fill three or four sticks a day and not have to worry about uploading them. I try to upload to my hard drive just for safety but I often don't get to burn the shots to a cd for several days. This being the case....the stick is uploaded to my hard drive and the stick then becomes the back up until the file on the hard drive gets burned to a cd. Somewhat complicated but I'd hate to loose that one image (or more) that was the shot of a lifetime.

And I just returned from a shoot in South Carolina...filled four sticks every day....glad I had 8 with me. No I won't buy the larger sticks...too paranoid about something going wrong (mostly human error) and loosing too much data at one time. Call me paranoid but 128 is my safety limit.

Hmmm. I shoot 3:2 FINE and I have no trouble getting 60 (or sometimes more) on my 128MB stick. That seems to be enough for me for now, but I haven't done any extensive travelling with my camera yet. When we have travelled previously we usually shot a single 36 exp roll per day, and a lot of those photos aren't keepers. Based on that I figured that a 128MB stick would last me 3 days shooting in the same mode I'm in now. I've been told I'm crazy for using such high resolution when I'm just printing them to 4 x 6 inch paper, but that's another discussion totally. I expect to have to get some kind of portable HD when we travel.

I started with the 16MB that came with the camera. Got a camcorder that came with an 8MB and used that for my camera too (only got one pic on it, but I did use it once!). Purchased 1x128 and took a trip to South Carolina for our first baby shower and forgot to bring my laptop, so ended up buying another 128MB. Now, I've learned to take all my pictures on fine mode because you never know when you're going to want a picture at higher quality, and am finding that 2x128's aren't quite enough. I'm sure that if I had a pocket full of them that I'd use them all!!

Cheers!

Doug,

Shooting in the highest mode isn't crazy (I do it too). You never know when you'll want one printed larger, and if you end up taking them all at a low res then the one time you will want to get it larger it will not look as nice.

Andrew,

I have the opposite paranoia. Being on the run, I'm always dropping stuff. I'll rather have a huge memory stick than to have a bunch of stick that I know I'll step on one day. :)

Four 128MB sticks is 200 pictures at max resolution. You shoot that much in 1 day? Wow. For me an active day is about 50 pictures, but to each his own.

When you have time to review your pictures, are you keeping most of them, or are you throwing many away (perhaps because you take several shots of each scene with different settings to find the best one)? If you end up disarding many of them anyway, you could try reviewing them on the camera's LCD in the middle of the trip. I know it can be hard to judge pictures on that little screen, but some shots are easy to throw out -- wrong focus, bad exposure, missed action, etc. And it's less frustrating to throw out questionable shots than to miss a few potentially great ones at the end of the day because you've run out of storage.

I've got 6 128MB sticks right now. So far it's been enough for taking little day trips, etc.

Why do you use fine mode? I don't really see a difference between that and standard even when magnified 300% when I did my little tests. I have been sticking with standard so far. If there's a good reason that you see to use fine over standard let me in on it:)

No amount of memory is enough. I have 2 x 128 and a X-Drive. Thats the way to go.

One day? A red bus tour trip anywhere in Europe will cost you more. On top of what I already own + laptop too, I feel I need more. Sometimes on a production take, there's no room to say "hey, wait! I need to download the files first. Hold that smile, will you? "...

Cheers!

Dwight,

I have been taking STD mode up until I got that 4th stick. I cannot see any difference between STD and Fine mode.

However, when I get a chance, I want to do a Photoshop experiment to see if Fine mode pix can be Post Process with more Saturation, Level changes, etc before showing degradation. If it proves that you have greater flexibility in enhancing your colors in Photoshop, it might be worthwhile to shoot in Fine mode.

I have 2 128's, 2 64's from my old s70. (that is funny to say "old" when the s70 is only 3 years old!)

I also have an IPAQ with a sleeve attachment that can read memory sticks and compact flash. For this I have a 1 gig microdrive (already had that), and I purchased the IPAQ memory stick to compact flash sleeve for about $70.

I can hold LOTS of pics!
