Does anyone out there have a digital backdrop they can send me please. I want to test my Photoshop skills before I go out and buy some digital backdrops. I am looking for something fairly neutral in colour.

I hate to sound lame & all, but why wouldn't you just go out & shoot/photoshop up your own here?

Pics of clouds, or blurry foliage would be good to start with... or plain textured walls.

Photoshop up some hi-teck stuff or stars/planets.

I went & did a search on digital backdrops, and many of the ones on offer for $$$ were no more or less then what I have described.

Help me understand if I'm wrong here...

Cheers,

Allen

The pro's of you out there will know of the hand painted muslin backdrops available. Some are also different shades of "curtain like" material that has waves in it. There is also a digital version available so you can shoot a person almost anywhere and put the digital background behind them so it takes on a studio look. I didn't think this would be such a confusing question !

i've heard someone talk about this but i have no information to offer since im not into that sort of thing ud be better off asking this question in a more SLR specific forum since point and shooters arent big into that sort of thing in general.

If you have Photoshop and you want digital backgrounds do a "Google" for Photoshop background tutorials. I am sure you will find many. Almost anything can be used for a background. Either as a photo backgound or altered in Photoshop to be painted as you want or anything you else wish.

1. The use of the word 'digital' has really gotten out of hand. If you want a muslin backdrop, then ask for a muslin backdrop. No matter what some advertiser has said, muslin ain't digital.

2. The easiest possible way to relplace backgrounds is if your original shot is with your subject in front of a contrasting, solid color. That makes it very easy to isolate the subject. Think chroma-key.

3. Do you have a gray wall? A gray/putty/taupe computer case? Take a digital shot of those, even up close, and then use something like that for your background. Just because someone sells something labeled as 'digital' does not mean it is a requirement for you to buy it!

Thanks to those of you (Shubin, Raegoul, David Vance, Caoedhen) with helpful suggestions. For the others, I wish I hadn't asked the question at all.

I am sorry to have offended you but I don't think that your original question quite made sense to everyone:

"Does anyone out there have a digital backdrop they can send me please. I want to test my Photoshop skills before I go out and buy some digital backdrops. I am looking for something fairly neutral in colour."

You see by saying "before I go out and buy..." gives the impression of buying something physical such as a piece of fabric. Then you say you want something fairly neutral in colour which sounds like fabrics. If you'd asked if there was somewhere where you could download some textured backgrounds it might have been clearer. But what made it more puzzling was that you want to test your Photoshop skills. In a way that is a case of putting the cart before the horse because to test your skills you might just try creating your own backgrounds in PS which is easily accomplished using a filter on a plain background and adding lighting effects etc. or by photographing textured surfaces such as walls and fabrics and modifying these as PS backgrounds. Anyway, good luck with your endeavours!

I have a stock of shots taken of fabric stalls in markets. All kinds of things, that I can drop in as a background, should I ever want them...

I must admit, I was wondering what a 'digital backdrop' could be, and thought it may have been an image you buy, and layer in with PS???

Ask this in the Retouching forum here on dpreview. They'll understand what you're looking for and why. ;-)
