. . . shoot like there's no film in the thing!

Sorry Jakob, but this getting tiresome.

Why don't you just get a 50D or a 450D or a 40D? They are good cameras, do you need anyone to tell you that?

Cameras are not things you buy once a year, 2 years is quite fast, myself I'm waiting at least another 2 years before I move to another camera, the D80 is still a great camera, even a p&s can do wonders, google Alex Majoli, the Magnum photog that uses p&s and has won many prizes with his PJ work (war included).

D200 to D300 or D80 to D90 (sight unseen) are major, significant and important upgrades. With Nikon bodies, you upgrade maybe every three years or so. Canon's introduces new bodies which aren't major upgrades, 30D to 40D, 400D to 450D etc. Now, 30D to 50D, that would have something I call an upgrade, just like D200 to D300. But at the end of the day, all of this doesn't really matter because for the vast majority of the people here, the 30D or D200 are more than camera than we'll ever be able to handle.

Hi Don,

Be sure I'm going to check the grammar and spelling carefully.

It was me who mentioned you in my reply to David, I mistakingly thought that David was criticising your English, which incidently is fine. I'm English but truly enjoy reading posts from those whose first language isn't English, I have no problem at all with those who post in 'broken English'

It was against this that I was trying to make a lighthearted point about David's criticism, with which I disagreed. As a fifty-something scientist, my English (my first language) is pretty rubbish, made worse by my wife and adult children having exceptional command of English (so I get flamed at home as well!!)

If my comments have been instrumental in causing offence to anyone, please accept my sincere appologies.

Geoff

Thats all fine and dandy if you consider the 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D and now the 50D nothing short of the nice clean ergonomics of a shoe box that only Canon users love to compare to the superior in every way D300....the D200 and the D80 still aren't any slouches either...your more cut out out for the Canon fanboy club..happy shooting with your wanna be's

That was what I thought, making a joke out of it. So much for an apology, but you sure did prove my point with that reply.

Its Canon's strong point. the 70-200 F4L is a fine lens, then 24-105 and the 17-40L.

These lenses perform very well and as a Canon user I gulp at the price to buy equivalent Nikon lenses that I can use on a crop or full frame body. I ought to roll the 100-400L as well, and the 400 f5.6 plus 300F4 IS.

Om lower cost lenses the 17-85 IS is comparable in IQ , though it lacks range, to the 18-200 Vr, and canons 70-300 IS compares well to the fine Nikon equivalent.

On kit lenses the 18-55 IS is a surprise as its much better than the old one and worth getting for its low price. Generally the Nikon entry lenses are good, the 18-70 is good, but the 18-135 is not to Nikon's normal high standards.

But to be honest, I find the lens investment means that once you have a few good ones you stay Nikon or Canon or Sony etc.

For the original poster I would say go try the new D90, and a 50D if you must. They do not line up too well, with perhaps the 450D being closer to the new Nikon though it lacks video (if that is your thing).

But seriously is it worth hopping brands for?
