Hello to everyone,

Please help - if you encountered this issue before.

After beeing used by somebody from my family, my Nikon D80 stopped working and displayed an error code as seen below.

Pressing the shutter, the message becomes

Inside, the mirror is locked up

If you hear a faint whirr when you push the release or reinsert the battery, then the shutter/mirror cocking mechanism has striped a gear and would require a major repair. Happened a few months ago to my old D80 I hD given to my son. I have done this repair years ago, but now I didn't even try to fix.

I had a similar error code a few years ago although my mirror was in the normal position. Mine needed a new mirror box and it cost $250 from APS.

Had something similar with my D70. Turned out to be the CF card not fitting correctly, not making the contacts properly in the camera body. Tried a 2nd card and wiggled it in snuggly, hard reset and it all went away. Give it a try, nothing to lose. ;-)

Same locked-up mirror problem happened with my D80 today. Tried all the solutions in this thread, also tried the reset button on the body. Nothing worked. I thought I'd check back for further suggestions before I tried an authorized Nikon repair center.

By the way, how do you check the shutter count on a Nikon camera? I looked through the manual and the menus and couldn't find figure out how to do that.

hi jdblaw , the d80 not working with err code looks like a shutter motor problem this happened to also the d50 ,d70, d70s the shiutter motor gives out and mirror usually

luck up and will not return to its normal position had that happen to me , shutter motor

is mounted on circuit board with shutter box you might be sending this out for a repair

or a new camera , hope i helped gjr

I don't believe Nikon provides any internal means of viewing the shutter count. The easiest options are using your favorite image viewer, which will likely have some means of examining the EXIF data (on a Mac, open a NEF in Preview, cmd-I for its information, and it's in the Nikon tab; or in GraphicConverter, ctrl-cmd-I, and it's about 4/5 the way down in the ExifTool tab), or on one of the various shutter count websites, where you upload a NEF to the site, and it plucks out the appropriate EXIF field for you.

Shutter count is in the EXIF of the last picture taken. Get a program like OPanda to view all of the EXIF details.

Thanks for the help. Thanks for the help on the shutter count.

My D80 goes to the camera doctor tomorrow. Funny that I'd just ordered a D750 the day before this happened, but I was planning on holding on to the D80 too.

lt looks like you've encountered what is quite a common fault with D80's, there is a small internal plastic part which can break and cause the shutter/mirror to jam, it also registers the error report as seen in your control panel.

This piece can apparently be modified and replaced with a metal one thus eliminating any future breakages. there is currently one for sale on ebay that has had this mod done, it may be worth contacting the seller to find out who did it for him.

l'm afraid this is not a self-fix problem and will require either a trip to the repairers or a replacement body, sorry!
