My camera is in for repair and this post is to perhaps help others that may experience intermittent Err issues with the D750.

Background

Had the intermittent Err issue come up on my D750. The camera would fire but the shutter would stick, the viewfinder was black and the picture recorded was black. Next shutter press would clear the issue. Had this happen 3 times out of 1000 actuations, small probability.

Needed to get it to repeat consistently so I could send the camera in and get it repaired. Nikon may have taken it anyway and done the right things to fix the problem but I needed to be sure.

Process
  1. Let the camera idle for an hour. On or Off don't seem to make a difference. Your time may vary.
  2. Change the ISO or Aperture to ensure shutter speed of 1/2000" - 1/4000". The lens does not seem to matter. It has happened with a 14-24, 24-120 f/4, 80-200 f/2.8 all Nikons.
  3. Take the shot. The mechanism locks with the viewfinder blacked out.
  4. Next shot clears the shutter and the camera operates normally from there.
Hits the issue every time with my camera. If you are experiencing an intermittent Err issue, this should help get a definitive answer. A glitch that is cleared or something that needs attention.

Hope this helps you. To be clear I love my D750, nothing has changed except hope to get my camera back so it operates without the Err issue.

Have a good day.

Got a quote $450. Waiting for it come back. A few more days, end of the week or so

LOL .... its 19 months with about a 1000 shutter clicks. Did not have time to use it because I moved from GA to NY, hence the low shutter count.

Choices were limited:
  • Not get it done - potentially have the camera stop up at a critical time.
  • Buy a new camera - $1500 right now.
  • Ditch Nikon - cost $10,000 or more with all the lenses I have. Yes I have considered it.
At the end of the day it's a good camera. Swallow hard and move on but have also made a decision to only purchase Nikon from the secondary market. Used that is, so Nikon does not directly get my hard earned $. When the time is right, with the next camera perhaps, move to something else. That's life.

I don't own the D750, so I did not follow all of the issues it had.
Have you googled "D750 shutter repair" to see all of the previously reported issue?

Do this, gather evidence, then contact Nikon and tell them you want the camera repaired for free.

Hi Sanjay,

Had the same issue with my D750 while travelling a few months ago but couldn't repeat it and it hasn't happened since then.

I will test this again and see if I can replicate based on your findings.

I'll keep you posted...

Rob

They had a consistent shutter issue with the camera. Had a recall on some and are fixing others for free. Somehow I don't qualify. What I have collected qualifies as proof it's a shutter issue.

At the end of the day they get $450 from me now and never a penny again. It's okay, a company must behave morally for me to want to do business with them. Have stopped seeing Nikon as a ethical organization. Still think their products are techically outstanding. You asked and I responded. It's going to be a nice adventure for me to figure out next steps.

Do post back, very interested to know if the solution is robust.

Appreciate that. Unfortunately not on the list.

I am having the exact same issue, one month out of warranty. I contacted nikon and they wanted $265 upfront. I choose not to send it in because the camera still works and frankly im enjoying some other cameras right now instead.

KEH estimated $250, and my symptoms match exactly as you described.

They did give me an upfront cost $450. Unfortunate.

Hope the algorithm/procedure helped you identify it.

Try another service center. You may have better luck.

My D750's shutter issue. My D750 started doing this 1-3 times out of every few hundred shots. Didn't think much about it. Started to increase to like 5-10... Now, it's like almost every other click. Tried new batteries.. Took off grip.. Tried different lenses.. No luck. I said, "F nikon" and moved on...

Nikon quoted me almost $500 to repair it. Screw it. I sold the junk on ebay as parts for that price. It's like buying a new car and the transmission crapped out at 20k miles and you're forced to pay for the repair..
Looking at Sony at the moment..
