D7100 or wait for D7200?

I used to have a D7000...it was stolen by a (now) ex-roommate, along with my 18-105 that was on it. I have no way to prove it, and that's not what this thread is about. I want to replace it, and the obvious choice is the D7100. Thing is, I keep hearing rumors that the D7200 is going to be announced soon...but there have been rumors that it's going to be announced within a month dating back for almost a year. The new D7200 would certainly have the Expeed 4 processor, and rumor has it it would also have almost double the cross-type sensors. Just wondering what the consensus says about waiting, but I also worry about missing out on all this awesome snow...

I would wait a month. If they don't announce anything in March (several rumors give a date in March), just get the D7100.

Buy the D7100 and start enjoying the best DX out there now! You can get great deals especially if you buy a refurb ($700).

d7100s buffer is awful in burst mode when shooting raw- if your a sports shooter i would wait for the 7200- rumored it will have a better buffer that does not suffer in burst mode when shooting raw

I, like you, am in limbo about this and had a thread of my own. I have decided to wait, but you or one of the other fellows on the fence needs to buy the 7100! I figure as soon as one of us caves, it will trigger the release of the 7200.

I would suggest waiting. I shoot mainly FX but had one DX, the 7100. Unloaded it last night while I could still get top dollar for it, ahead of the D7200?? announcement. I got $750 for it ( Toronto ) which I think is a really good price. While I guess most could live with the buffer, it's marginal at best, and high ISO just doesn't exist with it. Hopefully the D7200 will fix that for those requiring a DX.

if you don't care about the money you would save on a D7100, then I would just wait for the 7200 is announced.

I would go to the review here on dpreview, look at the conclusions page, check out the Cons and see if any of those are things that matter to you. If they are, then wait. But I bet you will find nothing there that matters to you. Then get it and take all those great snow pictures before it starts to melt.

I seriously doubt there will be anything revolutionary about the D7200 over the D7100. Certainly not enough to forego any photographic opportunities.

With D7100 prices at the moment it's a real steal. Worst case, you could buy a D7100 now, and sell it later, with an opportunity cost of only a few hundred dollars.

Or, if all he wants to do is take pictures of the snow before it melts, he could rent a camera for a short period of time while he waits for the D7200 to be released. I cannot imagine it would be all that expensive to rent a D7100 for a few days or even a week. After the D7200 comes out, the price of both new and used D7100 cameras will start to drop, eventually by more than it would cost him to rent a D7100 now to get those snow pictures.

I think there is yet another question you have to ask: between the D7000 and the release of the D7100 Nikon waited 2.5 Years. Do you think that the pace of innovating the top aps-c Camera at Nikon is fast enough? Or will it always be too little way too late? To put that into perspective, the Nikon 5xxx Line has been seeing a new model pretty much about every 12 months.

For me the pace is way too slow, and I fear its always going to be too little too late.

Therefore, I am looking at the Fujifilm X-e2, X-e1 (really cheap now), also the samsung nx300 and nx500.

p.s. ... it looks like Nikon is trying very hard to drive their high-end customers to the far more expensive fullframe models. Fujifilm and Samsung are showing that it is possible to have a different strategy about this producing and steadily innovating high-end aps-c cameras, even though their really good lenses are very expensive too.

No snow here, but that's a good thing. Here in the deep south of the U.S. we already have plants budding out and wading birds beginning to nest.

I guess the most attractive feature of a 7200, if it materializes, would be the certain processor upgrade, with the attendant noise improvement, and an improved AF system. Well...that and newness! :-)

High ISO on the D7100 is about a stop, maybe a bit more, behind the D750, which is what you'd expect from a DX sensor.
I'd go with the "maybe a bit more" Anyway, one of the few bodies I never took to. The fact that Nikon put a 6.5 fps frame rate and what seems like a one or two second buffer never helped. Beautiful camera within it's limitations - low iso and shooting something you don't need much of a buffer for.

Given the lens investment at this point, I'm committed to staying with my camera manufacturer. It took a lot of work to assemble just the right combination of lenses (if that's ever possible).

I have a D7100 and need a second body (not a backup body, I have that with a D300). So, I am waiting as it is not an emergency. :)

I have read some of the rumored enhancements which don't really get me real excited. It seems like spending which for me a lot of money for "upgrades" is not something I want to do.

I don't know what anyone means about the 7100 not handling high ISO's. I have done high school sports indoors at ISO 4000+ with good results with my D7000. Any noise is fixed in PP.

Having said all that, if you have GAS, gadget acquisition syndrome, by all means spend the money.
