does anyone have any information as to Nikon coming out with a new version of the D100 or a newer better digital SLR in a similar price range ?
and as to when this might happen ?

Make better becuse

Lacking in-camera sharpening leads to 'soft' looking images (to keep noise down?)
Internal / external D-TTL flash metering problem Higher noise levels from images converted from RAW through Nikon Capture 3

Nikon View Editor RAW conversion has limited functionality (NC3 required for full control) JPEG files not tagged with correct colour profile when color mode II selected
No onboard PC Sync flash socket (req. optional adapter) Awkward ISO selection on mode dial
Firewire would have been nice Compressed RAW mode is almost unusable (40+ seconds to store)
Viewfinder view is smaller than 'higher end' D-SLR's

Confusing, later you state concerns about RAW processing, this matter is a JPEG issue, and even at that, is not an issue for those that post-process.

II selected
Firmware fixed that, version 2.0

Opinion of yours, we all have our own, too.
Firewire would have been nice
Pro level function that is not cost effective in a consumer grade camera.
Compressed RAW mode is almost unusable (40+ seconds to store)
Why would you use this????
Viewfinder view is smaller than 'higher end' D-SLR's
You have just answered most of your issues, it's NOT a higher end DSLR. If you want the high end features, you have to pay for them. I'd like more from the D100, too, but it still offers alot for the money.

Not that I am aware of, just the Adobe tag.

Hi!
Firmware 2.0 fixed the flash d-ttl problem?
I am not sure if there is anything different as with ambient metering exposure with D100

Dial in flash exposure of up to +2/3stops and all is a non issue if you feel your shots are not bright enough, possibly corresponding to the histograms as well.

More important: I very noticed different behaviour with SB80-DX when you set up D-TTL fill flash or standard D-TTL. Normally the camera sets up D-TTL fill mode and here the flash is an exact match to the focussed distance.

Try it. Focus a close subject and it will be exposed proper while the background will turn out black if there is not enough ambient light.

In normal D-TTL all behaves more the conventional way, distance isn't incuded the way it is in fill mode, if at all.

Regards, A. Schiele

I doubt you're going to see much of a better viewfinder--after 30 years the cameras with the good viewfinders are still the high-end ones. The N80 viewfinder isn't really any better than the F601 viewfinder, and it's a 10 years newer camera.

But I'd expect to have an easier to clean CCD, more dynamic range, and less noise.

Personally, I don't expect anything till the new year, and by that time, for what the D100 offers, it will have paid for itself and your return on investment (ROI) will be positive, not negative--no pun on words intended (grin).

I have a D100, F5, F100 and love them all, and I use them appropriately. While any new product goes through updates and improvements, we'd never purchase anything waiting around all the time.

It's kind of like my Dad used to tell us when it was time to cut the grass and we'd tell him it might rain so let's put it off for another day--he'd say, if you wait, you'll eventually have to cut it, so why not do it now before it gets bigger (taller), and it will then only make it more difficult of a chore to accomplish.

In my opinion, if you wait, you're losing out--a shot you don't take is a shot you'll never have...thanks, rg sends!
