Last night I took around 200 photos at a party. Got home, removed the CF card, put the D100 on the shelf and downloaded all the photos to my pc. Everything was fine.

Today, I picked up my D100 and to my surprise there was no "E" (indicating no CF card) on the display. Nothing.

Turned it on and everything on the display was ok except for the "E" that was still missing.

Turned it off, inserted a CF card, turned it on and the display was the same.

By now I was getting a little worried. Tried to take a picture. I did take a picture but there was no preview.

Tried to see what the setting were and when I pressed the buttons... nothing.

Now I was really worried.

Took some more photos and nothing. Tried to see if the photos were being recorded on the CF card, but the card continued empty.

Tried all sorts of combinations, including removing the battery, changing ISO, WB, etc and then, all of a sudden it woke up and started to behave normally.

I just had to format the card and everything is OK so far

what do you guys think?

Did you take the card out of the camera while it was turned on?

Also, does the D100 manual say you need to reformat the card everytime you delete all the photos on it?

I always turn off the camera before card insert/removal and before lens change (did I forget this time?)

Only needed to format my card once before this incident. AFAIK, the manual doesn't say anything about formating the card after deleting photos.

I always format my cards (Lexar USB 512 meg) as it then changes the date on the folder. This is my normal work flow. So far I haven't had a problem.

Assuming that every option is working properly. I assume the D100 formats the CF card in FAT16. But, when you format it on a computer when the card is in a card reader, do you have to select FAT32 vs. FAT16 or does the PC always do one or does the Nikon software always use FAT16?

It might depend on how the photos were deleted. If you got rid of the main file structure or any part of it, you would have to re-format. I usually do every time or two, just to get rid of the extra stuff on the card that doesn't get removed by deleting the images. The D100 has a system reset, you can always try that if all else fails. I think the problem is as I related above, however, and you might want to have an extra CF card in case the card is bad.

Is custom setting 2 (No CF Card) ON?

Nikon firmware will format CF card using FAT 16. Kodak with their 700 series and Canon 1DS utilize FAT 32. On the PC you have to specifically select FAT 16 or it will normally use FAT 32.

................ I use Nikon recommended cards, and I hot swap all the time OK one should not do that but them I'm a professional and if my equipment baulked at this I’d dump it like pronto.

In the early months I had a few problems but after buying Nikon recommended and fast Lexar cards I only rarely and very intermittently have any problems at all and I don’t follow the rules so one would expect me to have tons of difficulties.

One thing I have noticed about all these digital camera is they seem to have a breaking in period and suffer resets and freezes periodically and then work problem free for years afterwards.

What's a photographer without a camera?

1. Only format cards in camera
2. Never remove card or install with camera ON
3. Never remove card with the green card active light ON
4. Always remove files but leave main Folder intact
5. Reformat if you see garbled info or have read/write problems

I don't think que problem that I had was because of the CF card. It was like the operating system had some kind of freeze and it couldn't avoid it.

It was the only time that this thing happened. I use two 512MB Ridata cards and I am very happy with them.

The only other small problem that I have sometimes is that when I remove the battery, the date is gone. But this only 1% of the times I remove the battery.

Maybe I should take my D100 for a visit to a Nikon Service.

Thanks for all your answers

There's your problem, the Ridata. I had 2 of the 256 20x cf's and neither would work right. I'm sticking with the Lexars, they are fast and work flawlessly. I agree with Gerbee on this one....

Did you format the card using your PC? the file system camera uses for the CF card is different to Windows's file system so if you write the card using your PC "i.e deleting a picture, copying a file to the card ..." it is likely that the camera will confuse....
